The SW corner of 6:
I'm more accustomed to stones along the range lines being set parallel to the line here they set them perpendicular to the line, the interior section corners were set parallel to the line in this township, the opposite system to what I'm used to, this is one interior section corner, the SE of section 4; 2 notches on east face:
At the S1/4 of section 6 I came upon this nicely set stone:
It is about 100' too far east, but it has a tiny 4 on the north face:
This is the SW of Section 8, it is plainly marked but again tiny notches:

We have quite a few stones but notches are very rare.

There are quite a number left out here, some townships appear to be devoid of any evidence, these guys did a nice job, even if they used a toothpick to scratch the stones.

We're your stones in Kansas set by GLO deputies or later by county surveyor??ÿ
I think mostly co. surveyor in Iowa as the notes I've read rarely mention stones, just post and mound.
Both, Bill. ?ÿSome areas set many stones, others set a few stones, and some were nearly always a stake and pits. ?ÿDepends on exactly where you are. ?ÿThe county surveyors set many stones and lowered those that interfered with road construction. ?ÿNo marks on those set by the county surveyors. ?ÿI know of one section corner that landed on an existing tree on a small creek bank. ?ÿI have found several cases of the GLO corner being a "+" chiseled into relatively flat bedrock.
Frequently in the areas where large numbers of stones were reported to have been set, absolutely none are found. ?ÿMust have been some rare type of stone that evaporates when placed in contact with soil.

I've heard of those too!?ÿ ?ÿThought it was just a regional thing here.?ÿ ?ÿMust be the same survey crew.
