48GX and SMI Cards

I have two HP 48GX calcs that I use for data collectors.
After one quit communicating I went to the back up about a month ago, and the backup quit communicating about 10 days ago. I have tested the cable and it is fine.
The memory cards are the newer SMI ones that have the internal, non-replacable battery that is charged from the calculator batteries.

The calcs will not send/receive to my desktop computer, nor communicate with my Zeiss
ELTA R50.
I have changed batteries, cleared memory, etc.

Any ideas?

Thank you for any thoughts,
Scott

PINIT ?

Reset everything.

One thing that can go bad is that the 4 tiny contact pins can become disconnected inside the calculator. I have one that way and never got around to sending it to Fix-That-Calc which I have not heard about in a while.

Are they accepting 48's for repair again?

I had two HP48GX to be broken by two different helpers last winter in a period of two months. Both had the 4 pin clip broken inside of the calculator.

Surprising enough was that they all were supposedly in their environmental case.

By a trickery investigation, both admitted to have removed them to clean the cover.

When replacing to the case one had missed alignment of the pins and broke the piece inside the calculator.

The other caused the pins to slip farther inside the calculator making no contact with the connector.

The 48s are usually available on Ebay for a reasonable price. I have built my collection to eight. I love these things.

I just checked fixthatcalc.com and his backlog says 3-4 weeks.

Thanks for the reminder, gonna send mine off tomorrow.

I guess great minds do think alike. I was going to suggest the same thing. If you have had it happen to you, you do remember the fix for it. Glad you figured it out.:-)

Only problem I have is "Warning - Invalid Card Data" that lasts about 2 seconds. The memory card uses a coin battery. Other than that the 48 is working OK.

I have had problems with slow communication which was a problem with the memory cards which did have a replaceable battery, a new battery fixed the problem. That was the good news.

A friend of mine had an SMI card, that I had bought for him when he worked for me years ago, that just quit on him. There was nothing to be done as i think they were burned in a EEPROM and there was no battery to replace. I gave him another newer higher end SMI card that I wasen't using and so far everything is OK.

So how long do EEPROMs work or do they go on forever?

I would be really sad to see all of the SMI programs fade away. It is really too bad that no one has made the SMI programs work with more modern equipment.

Just so you know, I run SMI on a jett xl with my topcon robot.
It's still out there (the wrong company owns it now) and in imho it's just the best.

Had the same problem a couple of days ago and starting to panic...I do have a backup 48GX but panicked anyway....took out of enviromental case and saw one pin a little bent...stuck something in there and straigtened it out...works fine...I have had the pins go into the calculator and had one I sent to Fix A Calc or Fix That Calc...check to see if pins are bent or pushed in....

We have one 48 that won't read the TDS cards. 🙁
