I was wading in about 3 feet of water measuring current and came back the next day to measure again, and right where I was wading this sapsucker was lying. Picture doesn't do him justice. Have been around these things off and on a lot, but rarely does one get this wide. I took a Laser-ace offset on his head, and his head was close to 20 inches long or longer. His back was about 3 and a half feet wide. I could not get accurate length. He is very old. Look at his battle-scarred nose and crooked teeth.
Here in Florida I give those old gators a wide berth
You gave birth to a wide one?
You should always have someone else with you for cases like that. You whack them a good one with the machete so they can't run as you make your getaway.
In Du Pratz's History of Louisiana, he writes about shooting a 19' gator and there is a reference to a 22' gator.
In the 18th century, it seems that a normal size gator was about 14'-16' in Louisiana
Then the Acadians arrived and discovered how good they taste fried, or in a sauce piccaunte.
Thanks, Cow.
I was wondering what difference it would make whether you had anyone with you or not.
Now I know:-)

When I take pictures, I like to put something next to the subject to show a sense of scale. Even if it's my foot or something like that.....;-)
yeah, and its a bad time to be around gators right now.. heading into mating season. they get a little unpredictable. be careful.
He looks hungry and sunburnt. 😐
Given a choice between getting bred by a gator and living or being eaten by a gator, I think I'll carry some lipstick with me.
well, maybe not THAT unpredictable! haha.
Hey gc, could I get you take this CSI looking "L" shaped scale and cross over there and set it beside that dar gator fer me. I've got a cold one waiting when you get back......;-)
BTW, I don't mess with gators and do not approach when spotted.
