Would you call this a 2"x2" section of car frame?
The cross shaped top measures 2"x2":
I'd call it a drill steel.
2" Steel Bar?
I asked because the notes call for a 2x2 section of car frame. This is approximately in the right location but it's not what I was expecting to see.
This may not be what I'm looking for.
I agree, this looks more like a drill steel than a section of car frame. Drill steel is common monument material in the gold country because they were available.
Looks like it could be part of some type of axle.
car frame? if you mean like a body-on-frame construction automobile, most car frames were C-channel - that looks like a frost pin
Dig around a little. The drill steel may be a guard stake.
Keith's right...
It's a drill rod (steel) alright. The hole in the end goes all the way through the rod, and conveys compressed air to the cutting surface to cleanout the cuttings.

or some call it a driving head monument or a buttonhead monument. It's an Army surplus tent stake, they made really nice monuments.

How long are those things Dave? And they really do look like some good monuments. How long would it take to stamp those things too? And how old are they?

I don't know how long they are.
My understanding is these were available after WWII. This one was set in 1966.

Could it be the surveyor before you that described it did so incorrectly? That does look like an upside down drill steel to me. I can't imagine how it got bent though... those things are tough. I mean really tough. It may have taken a backhoe or something like that because I think it would tear up any car or truck that I can think of.

The ones I've seen around here (Yolo County, CA) are 36" long. The story I heard is that one of the local firms bought pallets of them shortly after WWII as Army surplus. They're all over the county, and are very sturdy monuments.

Wooden tent stakes are pretty danged big. I'm guessing it would be about three feet long like the wooden stakes I've seen.

He signed the R/S in 1966 as Surveyor and County Surveyor.
He checked his own map LOL.
I wonder if he argued with himself over some detail.
That is definitely a drill rod.
I would think a 2x2 section of car frame would resemble a 2x2 angle iron with a more rounded corner.

Sounds normal to me..I do it all the time and no matter what the outcome, I always win the argument.
PS Did you notice he is still active? Maybe he has some answers to questions you may have

Don't get me wrong, it's a good map.
It says Someguy and McMinn, Inc. with McMinn signing the map and McMinn signing as County Surveyor (he must've had the contract). I can't remember Someguy's name offhand.
Up here it's common to put the company name on the map; I notice you don't see that on L.A. County maps.
There's a couple of possibilities.
The Surveyor that called it a section of car frame could have been mistaken or the other suggestion made above that it is a witness stake is possible too. I need to scrape around there to see if the car frame is nearby.
