Possibly.  They could have been reference points to layout homes and walls.  Really cool they found some old monuments.

I always thought that the world's second oldest profession was toolmaking? Second only to the "entrepreneurial endeavours" of the female variety?

Full disclosure though, I am the son of a toolmaker. So I might be a bit biased. Having said that, if I were thrust back into prehistoric times, I'd want a Swiss Army knife before I'd want a Total Station.
