Had to get new computer(windows 8.1)wont tell you how I feel about it but its not good. I use a TDS Ranger data collector and connect to desktop with a USB cable to transfer data to PC using windows mobile device center. In windows 7 the windows mobile device center would open and connect to data collector soon as I plugged it in. It does not connect at all in windows 8.1
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Todd
Use the search function to determine whether or not your new computer has Windows Mobile Device Center installed. For some reason Windows 8 doesn't seem to come with it installed.. If you are indeed missing the program search for it on the Windows website and install it on your new computer.
If that doesn't work (by detecting when a device is paired with the computer and automatically installing the driver), try opening Windows Mobile Device Center before plugging in your DC.
I have an 8.1 laptop and Windows Mobile Device Center only launches about 25% of the time. I typically just plug in the Ranger, listen for the audible verification on the laptop, and then use the laptop's file explorer. The Ranger shows up in the tree of available devices and folders and I just open it from there.
There really is no advantage to using Windows Mobile Device Center for routine file transfers as far as I can see.
You may also be able to transfer via bluetooth but that is a little more complex and usually not worth the effort.
Good luck,
Dave.

I put mine in through the docking station referenced above and this problem went away.
You can also try each usb port on your pc, they are not all the same.
if you are desperate you can copy and paste on to a flash drive but that is a pain.
Hope you get it worked out soon because I know this is stressful.
