I downloaded the free Windows 8.1 upgrade onto my ASUS laptop and set it to run.
After a few hours, it seemed like the install had completed when I saw that my usual desktop was in view on the screen. After failing to get any response from clicking on any of the icons, I decided it probably needed a reboot to continue.:-S
So.... I powered it down and ever since I have seen only a black screen when I power up. 🙁 It hits the HD and seems like it is trying to boot but no go. I have tried all the recomended fixes I could spot online, including buying a repair/boot disk from a third party that did absolutely nothing except make my wallet lighter.

The computer came w/o any restore/backup media. The restore function is on a separate hard drive partition. Problem is I can't get there the way it is. BTW.. I have tried powering up while holding down every function key there is... same result, nothing.

So, any suggestions based on your own experiences? Also, if you are going to do this to your machine, obviously... do not do what I did.

TIA.

Does it POST? When you say black screen, is the screen actually on with nothing on it or is it off?

It is on and the touchpad works as well.

The touchpad works as in you can see your mouse arrow on the screen and move it around using the touchpad?

You said it was trying to boot, but clearly it already has otherwise your touchpad drivers would not have been loaded. I used to have an ASUS and it was either the ESC or F2 key that would load the BIOS menu, F8 usually allows you to load safe mode on windows as well. As the other poster said, don't hold the keys down, just start pressing them once every second.

A lot of computers these days, especially laptops, have a selection for which monitor or monitors are turned on. For instance, built-in screen vs both built-in and external, vs. only external. Could it somehow have gotten into "only external" mode? There is a function key (it varies between models, and you may have to hold down a special shift key also) to select between modes.

Same problem here

Hi 2x,

You're not alone. Google "just a black screen after 8.1 update"

I have the same problem, except sometimes my black screen also has a cursor present...other times the cursor is hidden, until I move the mouse and the cursor shows up. When I can see the cursor I have found a way to get into Safe Mode. I am using the computer to write this response, but after 2 days of trying I am not any further at getting things back to normal.

Good luck.

How I fixed mine

Finally...success!

Got the computer into Safe Mode. Then:

1. Went to Control Panel, System, and disabled the autoinstall of device drivers
2. From Control Panel, Device Manager, Uninstalled display/video drivers
3. Reboot
4. Obtained graphic vendor's setup program, and reinstalled graphics card vendor's display/video drivers.
5. Reboot
6. Went to Control Panel, System, and re-enabled autoinstall of device drivers

It was a little problematic getting into Safe Mode, but I learned there are at least 2 ways to do it.

Good luck
