I have installed Trimble Data Transfer on my Windows 7 Home Premium laptop. I have a Trimble 4000ssi that I would like to download my static files from. Unfortunately Data Transfer is defaulting to the Trimble 4000 option that is set to COM3. I get a server busy warning from windows and I am unable to do anything. So CTRL+ALT+DEL.

If I uninstall the program, shut down, reinstall and then let Data Transfer attempt to connect until a timeout occurs I can actually add a Trimble 4000 which I called "Trimble 4000ssi" on COM7 (the 4000ssi is powered on and this is the correct USB port, I checked it in the device manager). Then if I attempt to connect, the program doesn't respond.

So, does anybody know if there is a way to change the default port in Data Transfer for the Trimble 4000 device?

Also the COM3 port in device manager is listed as "in use", by what, I don't know.

Any work arounds that have been discovered?

I am going to try downloading GPLoad later tonight to see if I can get a connection.

Thanks,

I tried that. I changed it to COM7 and no connection. It could be that my serial to USB adapter is not functioning for this use.

Hi Kevin

I have found over the years that not all serial to USB adapters are created equally. Some work for Trimble receiver data transfers while others do not.

One I found that works flawlessly is the Iogear. Be sure to follow the driver installation instructions to the letter before connecting it to your USB port.

The web page linked has a tab to show you where to by one.

Good luck.

Doesn't respond, or tries to connect and times out? If the port settings on your computer (data bits, baud rate, stop bit) don't match those of the port on the 4000SSi, Data Transfer will try to connect for a maddeningly long time, then finally give up. While it's trying to connect, you can't do anything with it.

I've successfully used a USB-serial converter with a laptop, but like others I've found that not all work reliably. A genuine serial port is a better solution, but adding a serial card to a laptop isn't always feasible.

It doesn't respond. The flashlight search icon does not appear.

I have a desktop running XP with serial ports so I can download. My laptop would be more convenient though.

I would like to figure out what is using COM3 on my laptop and reassign it to another port if possible. Then by assigning the USB port with the serial adaptor to COM3 I would hope that Data Transfers default settings would detect my receiver.

Kevin
I download a 4000ssi using a Tripplite USB/serial converter #u209-000-r to a Toshiba laptop running Win 7 professional. I use Trimble data transfer set to com 1, baud 19200, 8 odd 1, no flow control.
I make sure I use the same usb port on the computer each time I download otherwise it seems to get "confused".
Don't know if this helps much but it is what I do successfully.

Good Luck

Pre-Win7 I could download with a cable and the unit on battery power. With Win7, I have to connect the usb/serial converter by cable to the serial connection on the charging station, then use the cable with the lemo connector on the charging station to connect to the power/io port on the 4000ssi. If I take the charging station out of the loop, it just doesn't seem to have the power to communicate with the usb/serial converter.

Kevin
I forgot a step in my post above. I use the battery charger interface coupled to the serial port adaptor like Stephen.

The products from Brainboxes have worked for me far better than generic adaptors, I had the Express card adapter for my old laptop, never an issue, new laptop doesn't have that slot so I just bought a USB version from them, haven't installed it yet, BUT I expect it to work flawlessly. I don't remember if I have used the Brianboxes adaptor to download Trimble data (probably have since some clients use TNL equipment and I currently have Trimble data Transfer installed), but I have been real pleased with anything I tried to connect (WIN7 64 Pro version on a laptop).
