point label style question Civil 3D

I have a pretty good knowledge of how point groups and point styles work. I've set up a number of them on my own. In Civil 3D is it possible to display only part of the description as the label style?

I'm not sure if it is or not. Here's an example: Suppose I shot trees of varying diameters. I want the point style to display as a tree symbol, which isn't hard, but I want the label style to be based on description only and only display the diameter with a " suffix to indicate inches. So an 8" deciduous tree coded as DT 8 would display as simply as 8". Can it be done?

I know I could make different point groups for every possible diameter and make the symbol larger or smaller accordingly, but that seems like a pain and may not be practical as they would likely overlap when utilizing different scales.

Play around with the scale factor form your DT and CT symbols. I think I set the st for the symbol to 0.50. I got C3D to scale the trees based on size by doing that. As to having C3D read DT 8 and output 8" I never found a way to make that happen. I would send you what I used a couple of years ago but the company I work for now does do topology work or use C3D.

Of course it can.

And easily, too... Just needs a little setup.

Your solution is found in the description key manager.
1.Settings tab of the prospector.
2. Points node -> description key manager (right click) select new

Once you are looking at the description key manager, you need to right click in the window and select "new"

You need to build a new description key, try "DT*"

The code of. DT* will catch all your deciduous tree shots as they are inserted into the drawing.

Here's the trick. In the column with the header "full description" you need to enter without the brackets.

This will allow you to display use the first parameter of the field shot on the point label style.
You'll need a new point label style, and show "full description" instead of "raw description" for your point label.

For example: a raw field side shot was coded "DT 8 WPINE DEAD"

And if you set the FULL DESCRIPTION in your description key manager to: . The full description plotted on the point would show as

(Again, without the brackets).

C3D can lay down I think up to 9 "parameters" after the $0 parameter- which is the raw code in this case of DT.

You can go crazy with these things, like have a specific code for each tree species, and have the plans really get labeled out of control. 🙂

You just need to remember that you can re-order the sequence you filter points through your multiple description key sets.

Good luck and happy labeling!

PS - if I missed a step I apologize. I'm doing this post from memory only. 🙂

I`ve created some points with the same Raw Description and applied different Description Formats so that you can see what happens to the Full Description. You can use Description Keys to apply the format or you can set it manually, as I did.

Using no format or $* means that Full Description = Raw Description.

The raw description can be as long as you want, but if you want to pick out specific words to build from you can only use the first ten - $0 to $9

You can use any other words you want, special characters etc.

Thanks Steve, thats cool.

I just wish my current data collector would let me add more than 20 characters (give or take...) for a raw description. Even though Civil 3D can deal with up to 9 parameters, I generally can only get away with three, since a counts as a character in my old TDS Ranger running SurveyPro 3.

Im hoping my new Leica data collector running SurvCE4 will allow more.

Also, I'm still waiting for that "unicorn" data collector that will let me enter inverts for sewer/drainage rim shots, so that I can label the symbols with the invert elevations based on raw shot information.

It (Civil) can do it, but the operator needs to manually enter those invert measurements to the shot data once in the Survey Database. Sorta missing the point.
