Nomad connection problems

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I ate enough to kill a normal man.

Anyway, my Nomad data collector has decided not to play well with my Windows 7 laptop. When I connect the usb, the computer doesn't recogize it. The computer does recognize all my other devices - cell phone, camera, etc. I use the same cable with my camera as with the Nomad and it works fine.

I can plug the Nomad into an old Dell laptop running Windows XP and it recognizes it immediately.

I tried reinstalling Windows Mobile Device Center and it didn't seem to make any difference.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I have never been able to make the bluetooth conncection work on my Nomad. I was disappointed with that when I bought it, but the usb worked so I've always used a cable.

The first thing to do is to do a hard reset or reboot on both the laptop and the nomad and then try each usb port individually. There are two ports on my computer that will not allow me to connect to the nomad and there are two that work. If you do have bluetooth on your computer, which is what I use rather than usb, that is the better option and it will definitely work if you play with it a little.

Once you find the usb port that will work you can get a usb bluetooth dongle for around 20 smackers.

Try downloading windows mobile. Sorry I see you already did that. Did you set up a partnership? I had to reinstall Mobile for some reason and it then worked.

Yeah, I've tried all the normal stuff. I rebooted both machines, reinstalled Windows Mobile, and tried all of my usb ports. My computer has bluetooth but I have never been able to make the Nomad connect with it.

I tried connecting my Ranger to the computer and it connects, so I'm thiking there is something with the Nomad.

Aloha, Chris: Did you try ending the partnership between the Nomad and the PC? Creating new partnership have solved some connection issues for me in the past. However, that was WindowsXP and Trimble TSCe. I don't have that setup any more. I never had any issue with my Ranger 500 and Windows 8.

I hope you'll find the issue!

I tried that and it didn't seem to help. I'm starting to think I may have to send the Nomad to the repair shop and possibly have to software reinstalled.

Thanks for all the replies!

You said "I can plug the Nomad into an old Dell laptop running Windows XP and it recognizes it immediately" so it doesn't sound like their anything wrong with the Nomad. Sounds like some kind of rare and odd compatibility problem that could be caused by something like the USB drivers on either machine ... suck when this happens because it drives you nuts.

[sarcasm]Don't throw away the XP[/sarcasm]

It is a shame that support has not stepped up and helped everyone thru the transition into the new phases of computer modernization and new operation systems.

I had the same problem when I added 3.0 usb. Get that working and then something else is not in sync and stops working.

There is a driver out there that will fix your problem. Of course it is a different driver for most every model of laptop and it takes something I don't have, "patience with computers".

I've been lucky and have found a few young experts that are happy to fix the problem for a Happy Meal and a chocolate malted beverage.

B-)

I looks like I've managed to make it work. I did a google search for my model of computer and found a usb driver update. I installed it and the Nomad is connecting now. I hope it continues to do so.

Thanks for the help!

Download ActiveSync

Active Sync doesn't run in Windoze 7 so that would not help.

There is a check box in the connection setting for UPB connections to allow Advanced Connection . On some computer/nomad (or other models, and brands for that matter) the box needs to be checked to work and on others, it needs to be unchecked.

I cannot tell you why, but when a Nomad or similar hand-held device does not want to play nice with Mobile Device Center, changing the status of that box usually solves the problem.

Thanks Jerry,

Now that you mention it, I think I changed that box when I was trying to fix it. That may explain why it started working.
