I'm working on a job with larger than normal point files as well as hundreds of acres. The scope of work is nothing new. However, I'm looking to try and integrate ArcGIS and civil 3d with large point files to make things a little easier. At least that is my goal.
Has anyone here had luck with utilizing GIS to help catalogue field data with success?
I primarily do cadastral work, I keep all of my PLSS corners in a geodatabase with attributes like NEZ, datum/realization, surveyor names, corner record number, material, notes, etc....
I guess the question is, what are you looking to get out of Arc?
You probably already know that C3D can handle multiple attributes for points with customized point file formats, and any modern field software worth a darn can be set up to collect additional attributes beyond the descriptor. They can support all manner of extra information into C3D - and export it out to GIS if you desire.
?ÿIf you are running TBC, Trimble's GIS module can help out if you have a pre-existing schema that you wish to use, and push data to and from an existing geodatabase. It's come a long way, but is still pretty project-specific and unlikely to give a ROI unless you are using it regularly.
Like Jon mentioned, a running geodatabase of control/boundary points can really help out an organization. But incorporating Arc on a single project might just add too much complexity unless there is a very specific reason for using it.
