I am looking for an android app that will let me import a csv file of coordinates and then pick one to navigate to. This is very easy to do on my Garmin drivesmart GPS, or on the discontinued Street Atlas software on my windows PC.
I tried doing a few different searches but nothing that does that comes up.
I think I've looked for this a few times in the past, but got nowhere - I think because we typically want to work/search in local grid coordinates, whereas most apps go in Lat Lon or WGS 84 UTM, so it would require a 2 step converter.
Looks like Mapit GIS might be able to do what you want. I haven't tried it...
I've done that with onxhunt.?ÿ Pretty good app with tax map layer, owner names, aerial, contour, etc.
I use google maps with Android Auto to navigate to the job site. There I use the Ipad with Google Earth on and the prepared kmz file with points, polygons and notes to see what must be done. It takes some preparing in Google Earth at the office, then mailing the kmz to yourself, but it works and covers th whole Globe compared to our Flemish and Walloon Gis portals where I can do the same, Google Earth does a better job for me, and I have only t learn 1 system.
chr.
My files are always in lat/long, WGS84 (NAD83). At the level of navigating to a point for photo or lidar control, the difference in datums doesn't matter between NAD83, ITRF, WGS84, etc. These locations are picked by the client and are approximate, they are not actual existing points on the ground.
I do have BackCountry Navigator, and google maps, and maps.me. Each has advantages and drawbacks. BCN is a really nice app, it can display a variety of maps including USGS quads, aerial and satellite imagery, etc, and it will import points (.csv), gpx, and kml, but is not routeable (is that a word?).
Maps.me is routeable but you cannot pick a point from a list.?ÿ
Similar to maps.me, I can pick a location in google maps, or enter a coordinate, but cannot pick from a list. Same on my navigation system built in to the vehicle.?ÿ
That makes the Garmin drivesmart worth ten times what I paid for it.?ÿ
When I am working a ground control job I usually have my Garmin running, and global mapper and street atlas on the PC hooked up to an external GPS. Supposedly the verizon mifi has a function built in where you can use the internal GPS, but I have never gotten that to work.?ÿ
Looking back to when I started, we would do these types of jobs with just paper maps and map books. I can remember doing USGS quad control out west, we would have to get the control as near as possible to quad corners. Sometimes I would be semi-lost, and would stop, turn on the 4000SL (large bulky receiver), put the antenna on the roof, get a lat/long coordinate, and plot it by hand on the paper map. And a lot of that was done at night due to limited satellite coverage.?ÿ
?ÿ
On X is a great app for anyone that spends time outdoors.?ÿ I'm not sure that you can import a csv though.?ÿ KML and GSX files are simple to import.
Maybe one of the Garmin android apps would do it (probably not):
We are currently doing some stormwater field checking and use a Garmin GNSS handheld. We use Garmin Basecamp on PC for handling the waypoints and I see that Basecamp does have a iOS version but not android.
As noted, the issue for us is that while Basecamp can import/export csv and text, it is always Lat Lon. We have Basecamp and the handheld running with a user defined grid for our local system, and we really need our import/export in that grid. So to get around that we use a freeware (up to 100 points) that converts lists of local grid points into .gpx which the Garmin can import/export.
If you have a Google Account and go to maps you can create saved places via lat/lon.?ÿ Then on the app on your phone (or iPad, etc.) you can save areas for offline navigation.?ÿ Works really well for me.?ÿ I like Apple Carplay with Google Maps app, I can navigate right to any waypoint on my car's built-in screen.
