Aloha,

What is the difference between these two? Why would one prefer one over the other? As far as I can tell they both hide the entities...is the something else I am missing? Thank you so much!
I use the freeze on a more "permanent" final dwg basis, and on/off as a more "temporary" as I am working thru the drafting process.
I do a lot of "select all" and "clear all" freeze/thaw on/off combinations during the drafting of say a detailed topographic map etc.

When you turn a layer off the elements on that layer remain in the current set of drawing elements for display except that they aren't displayed. When you freeze a layer the elements are excluded from the set of elements that get recalculated upon regen. Sort of like the difference between closing the refrigerator door and putting a padlock on it.
These things used to be a lot more meaningful in our daily lives when computers were much slower and screen regens took long enough to go get, and drink, a cup of coffee.
Funny you should ask because I was just thinking about the REGEN, REGENALL, and REDRAW commands, which also have roots in the days of monochrome monitors, pen plotters, single digit processor speeds, and 5 1/4" floppy disks.

If you're working with someone else's drawings (architect, engineer), often on the initial opening of the drawing it looks like something resembling a spider web or abstract art. I use the freeze/thaw and on/off to clean up the drawing space. I freeze layers that aren't related to my scope of work. I turn layers 'off' that I will need to reference occasionally.
Aloha,
Thank you so much everyone for sharing how you use these features!

Not sure if it is in Carlson with Intellicad but something that I use quite often is "Layer States Manager". This allows you to take snapshots of various layer settings and return to those very quickly without having to cycle through layer settings.
For instance, you may decide to freeze all the features, trees, walks, buildings etc... and leave on items such as your traverse points and the boundary.
Then you create a snapshot of that and can return to that layer state very quickly even if every layer is on.
We use this primarily for construction as we have layer snapshots for "Stake curb", "Stake Storm" etc... but we use it for many other drawings as well.
I'm sure the software you use has some form of this command - it comes in quite handy.
These Commands work both ways, plus you forgot some;
Freeze, you pick what you don't want, crossing or window works, then Thaw returns everything you froze.
Layer Isolate, you pick what you want and it turns the rest off, Layer Restore brings everything back.
Layer Off you pick them one by one in the Layer Command, then have to turn them back on, one by one in the Layer
Command.
Lock Layer in the Layer Command leaves the layer on for you to see but you cannot edit anything.
You can however add to the Locked Layer, but not erase until you unlock it.
I use them all.
Another Layer Command I like is "Do Not Plot" I can put notes on that layer in the drawing for myself that will not plot. I also have window borders that I do not want plotted but I want to know where they are.

Yswami,
One place I use layer off is on my viewport in paper space. I have it on a "Do not plot" layer so that it does not plot, but I like to turn it off when I send the drawing to someone else so that it does not show up when viewing. If the viewport layer is frozen, then it does not work as it is suppose to.
