I've inserted a MrSid aerial into my ACAD file using the Display Manager>Data>Connect to Data> etc......with no problem.

The problem is, is that no matter what I set the IMAGEFRAME variable to, I can't clip the aerial image with IMAGECLIP because there's no frame to select it.

I used to use MAPIINSERT to insert aerials and didn't have this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have ACADMap3d 2011, but a similar thing happens in AutoCAD 2000 w/LandDevelopment if I let it insert the image as an OLE object. Based on the command structure you gave, that sounds like what it is doing. A good rule of thumb in my version is if you click on an image and you get grips at the corners and the middle of each edge of the image it is an OLE object. If you only get grips at the four corners then it has a frame and can be clipped.

Yeah, I thought that too. It only has 4 grips, but I still can't select it.

Try this link. http://advsurveying.com/blog/?p=176 - They give a good explanation of the two different ways to insert a MrSID image in Civil 3d. Sounds like the way you're inserting it is more efficient but doesn't work with imageclip.

That's a feature!
Imageclip does not work with any FDO data.

Gawd, AutoCAD is the most poorly cobbled together piece of software I've dealt with in over 20 years. For every one feature they fix with a new release the break three others.

Guess what - the 'mapiimport' (map image import) doesn't work in 2011. Our local AutoDesk rep blames Vault. Suggests we use the FDO connect tools. That works, but you take a raster performance hit bringing your imagery in that way. AutoCAD released a 'hotfix' for the issue, but it doesn't work in the 64-bit environment.

Planning on doing coordinate system transformations on 2010-11 drawings with Civil3D objects in them? You can forget about it. Another AutoDesk 'oops'.

When ESRI releases a new version of ArcGIS we rush to see what new functionality has been integrated. When AutoDesk releases a new version of AutoCAD we rush to see what bugs we are going to have to work around. It's that bad.

In the enterprise geospatial data arena AutoCAD just ain't ready for prime-time. Not sure it will ever be...

I use Civil3d every day and I had not heard of any problems with image insertion in 2011 so I did a little research. The problem appears to be related to the Vault client which is installed by default with Civil3d. If you cannot use the hotfix then another solution is to remove the Vault client - assuming that you don't use it.

I don't use Civil3d. I use Carlson Software within ACADMap3d. I think there are some lisp routines that provide a work around, but I want a real solution.

As of the last time I checked (a few weeks ago) the hotfix does not work on 64-bit platforms (it was written for 32-bit systems).

And we ARE trying to implement Vault, so it remains an issue.

As much as I disagree with ESRI's 'world domination' approach to GIS, at least their software is well integrated and their releases are stable.

Type onto command line mapiinsert.
