Is anyone familiar with a program called Illustrator?
Is there a way to convert it to a CAD file?
Adobe Illustrator is probably the leading vector-based graphics-design program.
It is sort of a counterpart to Adobe's raster-based Photoshop program.
The excellent and open-source Inkscape program is usually able to open Illustrator (.AI) files.
I have Inkscape installed here, if you have a file I would be willing to try it and report on what export options are available. If you want to do that, send me an e-mail via the link by my name and we can figure out how to get the file here.

Adobe Illustrator is, as Glenn said, a vector based design program. Personally, I think its the best graphic design platform out there (it actually now includes a lot of the functionality of Photoshop, which is amazing). I actually got familiar with it in college using it for the exact purpose you have in mind.
Here are the steps. I currently use CS5, so for some other versions the process might be slightly different.
-make sure the all the layers you want to export are visible
-go to file>export...
-in the dialogue window, select either .dwg or .dxf, depending on your needs.
-the next dialogue window contains details for the version of AutoCAD you're using, the scale of the export, etc.
Thats pretty much it! Importing .dwg files is just as easy too.
Hope that answers your question!
Believe it or not there is a "you tube" video explaining how to do it, but thanks for your help.
