Ladd & Lon (Lat & Lon) ~ coincidence, I don't think so.
Both men have been ever so helpful today as usual.
New question, how do I list these 3D polylines in a way that I can quickly identify those that are at the 100 elevation range and those that are in the 700 elevation range?
So far I have one by one flagged those red that are at the 700 range, I just want to make sure I haven't forgotten some before I try to re-run contouring.
in plain acad i should switch to a front view,
now you can select all lines within your elevation range,
give them another (temporary) color
switch back to top/plan view to locate them there ...

This seems to be getting me there... not really sure yet how it works...

Another option from Ladd via email
Hi Brad,
You can also use the Edit -- Selection Sets -- Select by Elevation:
Select by greater, less or between elevations [/Less/Between]?
This builds a selection set that can be acted upon (via the Previous selection option) by a subsequent command:
Command: chgelev
Type of elevation change [/Differential/Scale]: d
Positive number increases, negative number decreases elevation.
Elevation Difference : 600
Ignore zero elevations [Yes/]? y
Change Layer for changed entities [Yes/]:
Select Entities for Elevation Change.
