Nicely done, but I think I'd rather blow my brains out than sink that kind of time into building a digital model. I know someone has to do it, and some people are really good at it and even enjoy it, but I'm not one of them.

What software?

I had two months to complete it but I price by value not time and the contractors save 10x the cost of what they pay for the model. 😉

0.24' (12' @ 2%) design error between ramp and main roadway PGL.

3d view

The contours show the error also.

And that, my friend, is where you have earned your money (several times over).

Nice presentation by the way.

Thad
Really beautiful work and great presentation as well.
I did someting similar when I worked for an NJDOT consultant for bridge work and scour surveys some years ago.
But this is much better!.

Highway Surface Model Pics - Terramodel?

I assume those are screen-shots from Terramodel. I have some pretty cool shots like that of EXISTING ground, built from field data. What do you plan to replace Terramodel with now that Trimble is going to let it die? I still run it on a virtual XP machine (won't run on Windows 7 64-bit), but I don't know how long that will be an option.

Highway Surface Model Pics - Terramodel?

I will probably be moving to TBC but I will hold onto TM for a while longer. I know TM well and it is simple to use.

Software

A few programs can create models like this, the trick is knowing how your software works to create surfaces in a timely manner. Fulltime I could get this done in a 3-4 weeks.

Software

In Carlson Software once you define the existing surface(tin), CL, templates
and template transitions you get the designed surface merged with existing surface,
cross section, 3D faces, TIN files and contours, quantities.
Surface 3D FlyOver alows you to view a 3D surface in a simulated drive over or fly over mode - options for different types of surface shading, direction of travel, viewpoints, vehicles, refrence surfaces, light position, color schemes, vertical exaggeration and more.
This can be done in 3-4 hours.

:good: It's not as pretty as Thad's but it'll work for me.

Terramodel Visualizer does a lot of what you are saying. Check out the pics on the first page of my website for a couple of examples. I will post some pics of the Visualizer later and/or a movie for your viewing pleasure.

Highway Surface Model Pics - Terramodel?

Awesome job Thad....my last job I created a field-to-finish enviroment in LDD.Field codes, symbols, description keys, point groups...the whole nine yards. It took awhile to put that together but we could pop out a reasonable model within a half hour.

How many topo shots were in your survey?

I think Thad 2-months effort is probably in building the TIN from whatever sloppy and incomplete data he gets provided with. Displaying it is not a big deal.

Unless I totally misunderstood, this is a DESIGN surface he built.
