This afternoon I was down at the title company literally fighting with a huge 8” roll of old RR Prints. They are 3’x5’long, and have been tightly rolled for years. Finally found the page I needed and it was a whole new fight taking 2 of us to gently contort the sheet to make the 10 ledger copies of the page. Made me think that a handheld scanner may be a good investment, just for these large sheets.
Anyone use something like this:Scanner

The land guys use them around here.

You can scan a clients info on the hood of your truck and they put the info on an SD card.

Check them out and read about the different models.

Some will create PDF files and some will not

Some will create files in different formats

Some are in color and some are not

Some will not scan as wide as a letter size paper

Most will scan long documents and some will not

I understand it is like anything else, it takes some practice to get it right.

on my want list also

Yes, and I really, really like mine. My buddy bought one also.

I have the ViewPoint Solutions Magic Wand. Mine scans 8.5 inches wide by however long you want. My unit creates jpeg files. The images are stored on a microSD card, and you plug a usb cable into it and it shows up like an external thumb drive.

The one my buddy bought will scan directly into a PDF file, and is a newer model than mine.

It is really handy for situations like you described. I have used it to scan portions of a client's construction plans that we could not leave the site with, the older plat books that are too big for the copier at the court house, etc.

Pretty handy to have in the briefcase or the laptop bag.

Haven't tried this one.

I've tried taking pictures of documents (like old plat maps). Although I have a decent camera, I find I use my smart phone a lot because it's handy.

It works, but you have to be careful you don't shake or move; it only takes a little to render an image useless. It costs nothing to repeat a shot, and that's saved me many times.

The handheld scanner software is getting better, and they can hold much more memory than before. I'd be willing to try it, but the selection process would take a guy like me half a day.

There's an Android app called CamScanner that works well. The app sharpens and brightens the image very well as opposed to using just a digital camera.

:good: to the CamScanner.

I have used it with my phone as well with my Nexus 10 tablet, so far, I have been pleased with the results.

I have A VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand too. Mine is the newer one that lets you produce JPEG or PDF, but each page is a separate PDF file. Also, it requires that the batteries be relatively fresh; you won't be able to drain the last bit of charge out of the batteries. I use NiMH rechargables for it.

Another thing is the newer model only produces color. If you want to convert it to B&W to make your emails smaller, you'll have to use a separate program.
