Hi There,

We've started using GIS to map infrastructure (mostly culverts for now).?ÿ We'd like to start using our cell phones to collect some of this data, but don't believe the cells are accurate enough (from our testing it could be off as much as 50 feet), and they seem to stop working when we travel out of cell coverage (must not have stand alone GPS in them).?ÿ Ours is a rural county so not great cell coverage anyway, especially in the outskirts where some of our culverts are.

Does anyone have experience using an external antenna with a cell phone or a special GPS enabled cell phone to get higher accuracy and to fill in the gaps for cell coverage??ÿ Any advice or recommendations??ÿ?ÿ

Thanks!

If I was doing it I would get the Trimble cell phone/DC.

Polaris has a no frills GNSS antenna with Bluetooth that will get you within a foot. Not very user friendly, but FieldGenius has a Android App that would make that easier. You would also need an network correction service and a cell phone data plan.?ÿ

It appears that you can get corrected positions using your cell phone GPS observations through the App 'Ntrip Client' (Or one similar to it, I have used a dozen correction apps the last month). I did that one day and the numbers looked better than straight cell phone, but not as good as using a GNSS receiver. That was not what I was testing at the time, but I'll try to do it again if I have a chance this week.?ÿ

Bad Elf? I thought these would BT position to a phone but this one doesn't specifically say that.

I would think that no cell coverage would equal PPK.?ÿ

The other option is this:

https://www.stonex.it/project/s700a-gnss-receiver/

It has the option to use Atlas, which is Hemisphere's PPP service over satellites. No cell coverage or base needed for accuracy in the 5 centimeter range, which should be an order of magnitude greater than you need for the utilities. They have a cell phone based app, or you could run Android Field Genius.

I actually won the perfect setup for what you described in a drawing.?ÿ
