I've been using Google Earth as a tool for the past couple of years. Until earlier this week, I had never had any significant problems. Now, when I open the program on my laptop, the images do not show up.
When I start the program there isn't the round, colorful, blue and green globe is nothing more than a black area with a few country lines showing up. Then when the program zooms in the roads and usual features show up as usual. But the imagery simply isn't there.
I have tried turning various layers on and off. No luck.
Suggestions?

I've never had that exact problem with Google Earth, but I have once or twice in the past few years just gone to Google and downloaded the current version and re-installed it. However, I haven't saved much in the way of map files or survey sketches. What little I have had hasn't been disturbed by the re-installation.
Cheers,
Henry
Anytime I've had a problem with Google Earth I've had to reinstall.
I am running windows xp and I can't get it to work crashes every time any suggestions
I found the problem. My video card drivers were updated last week. Those are the problem.
I got on a chat with tech support for the video card company. They told me to
1. Run your machine in safe mode and that will fix the problem.
Seriously? That is your solution? Just always run my system in safe mode?
or
2. Re-start your system and then follow these links to the Microsoft website that will have the most recent drivers for your video card.
First problem with that is when I restart the system the links are gone. Second, you are telling me that Microsoft will have more current drivers for your card than the ones your company installed on my system last week. Seriously?
Talk about bad tech support. Wow.

I did a reinstall. No help. Definitely the drivers. Should be able to fix it tonight.

Go to the Google Earth forums and search around. Can't help with that little detail. When having issues always provide as much detail as possible on your OS and what version of software you are trying to run.

If Microsoft made or at least designed every component on my computer, I would probably only use their drivers.
Their generic driver doesn't allow all the functions to work properly.
I've found that the developer of a component usually know what is best for their own creation.
My XPs will be offline as soon as my Win7 Pro is operational.

Exactly right Mr. Harris. How the manufacturers tech support can claim that Microsoft has a better driver for their product than the one they issued last week is beyond me. Of course, it didn't help that his first solution was "run your computer in safe mode all the time".

Larry:
He probably meant "Better to be Safe than Sorry". 😀
Well at least they didn't say "you need to re-format you hard drive".
I've heard that several times in the past and it just burns my bread!!:pissed:
Programmers are likely not supporting their upgrades to XP compatibility as finished next month being supported by Microsoft..

Did you try to start Google Earth using the Start-Programs method.
It gives you two program open options - Direct-X and Open GL
I've found the Direct-X mode works best for me, but you should try both.
Larry, I think I see the problem. Your glasses look dirty.:-D
