I have a client who wants to get into GIS (engineering firm) and they are asking me questions (which shows how newbie they are since I'm no GIS guy).

They wanted to know the signifance of using the EPGS coordinate system.
Their software offers a EPGS/FIPS NAD83 option, EPGS/HARN NAD83 option, a EPGS NAD83 option, and a EPGS NAD27 option.

I'm well aware of what HARN and NAD83 and NAD27 mean. I also understand the EPGS is an oil and gas database. I also understand that FIPS is a set of Federal standards. What I couldn't tell them is what to do with them. I have always assumed the EPGS was used mainly in the oil and gas industry and I could ingnore it.

These guys have never worked in the oil and gas industry and it was my first inclination to just tell them to pay no attention to the options; but I'm just not that confident I'm correct about that.

Wow I typed the acronym incorrectly-it’s EPSG not EPGS.

Note also that a lot of LandXML implementations use the EPSG code to identify the coordinate system in use.

EPSG is just a way to identify the frame of reference and coordinate system.
