Ok....time-travel back 10 years and try to remember how to do this. I'm in the process of trying to get new equipment, but in the meantime I need to be able to transfer some projects from the TDS Ranger to the PC using Foresight DXM. I had to find a 9-pin to USB adapter (they had one, but it was older and the driver wasn't working with Windows 7). I got that to work and the com port seems to be functioning.

I put the ranger in server mode set the com to com1 for 9 pin and baud rate to 9600 (I've tried them all) with parity none. Then I set the same settings on Kermit server mode in foresight. Get the error message about making sure there is battery and power, etc. The unit is plugged in with 100% battery and the memory is only about 1/4 used. Any ideas? Changing the bit rate or stop bits on the com settings? I messed with it a little, but don't think it will work. I even tried running foresight in compatibility mode for XP, but that did nothing.

Are you certain you are selecting the correct COM port?

I assume your Ranger doesn't have a USB port?

I assume since you are trying that route, that you have a Ranger 200 or similar that has no USB port.

If that is the case, when you go into the settings for COM1 on your Ranger, select the highest baud rate offered.

Then match that in your ForeSight DXM comm settings.

Failing that, if your computer offers you the opportunity to make a Mobile Device Center connection, select COM ports as an option.

But you need to look in your Devices and Printers listing (press the Windows Start button) and see what port the USB to Serial adapter has been assigned to. Make certain that the COMM manager in ForeSight DXM is looking for the port. I would suspect this as the most likely culprit at this point.

I know depending on what software you are using, that software must be closed to transfer files through DXM...sometimes I brainfart and forget about that...

I think that pertains to trying to transfer the .job file that you have open in Survey Pro. It creates a file-sharing violation. It's a Windoze phenomenon...

Dan I recently bought both a 9pin and a 25pin to usb adopter to try the same thing with survey link. The 9pin to transfer and the 25pin to attach my old sentinel. Both seemed to work with anything but the DC or sentinel. I even got my old HP400 laserjet to work with windows 7. I have since found out that there is a null issue with the sentinel that does not work with a USB conection, I would assume the same was my problem with the DC hookup also.

I was never able to resolve it. I found the old laptop they were using and can get it to work on that machine (Windows XP). I did all the same stuff, tried all the baud rates, but it only worked on the old machine.

This is a Band-Aid solution for now....I think we're getting new equipment next week to keep up with the times.

Dan,

I use foresight dxm to process (very basic) my tds raw data and job files.

I use active sync or windows mobile device center to copy and paste the job and raw files to my daily work folder, and then modify the file that is in the pc.

Good luck.

Jimmy
