I'm progressing with developing a workflow for Solar and Polaris using Larry Scott's truly awesome spreadsheet. It has the capability to absorb multiple direct and reverse observations. Right now I'm running the gun manually and logging the shots in a field book manually, along with the time. (I do have a record of the times using the "Timestamp" app on my iPhone. I'm doing it this way because there is no way to record an azimuth only in SurvCE.

But...I know I can record multiple azimuth only readings on the Topcon gun, and I can also output the data files. I note that in SurvCE there is a "Data Transfer" button with the following options:
Carlson/C&G
Kermit Transfer
SDR Transfer
TDS Transfer, and
Infrared Transfer.

I've output the files from the Topcon to a PC once before, (but it bordered on Black Magic doing so), but does anyone know if it's possible to transfer files from the gun directly into SurvCE (or even using some other app on WinCE) using any of these options on the ancient Jett data collector I'm using? I could then do it right in the field.

That way, I'd have a record of both time (from the iPhone), and the shots (in the DC), to match up in the office.

Having SurvCE, you need to download Carlson XPort. It will be at the bottom of the list on the dropdown list of downloads.

With a licensed version of SurvCE you can call Carlson and get the key to activate the program and it will enable you to do what you are wanting plus much more.

Been down that road. My version of SurvCE is too old; they want $250 for an Xport license.
But, so I understand, are you suggesting that Xport runs on CE?

I have XPort on my desktop.
$250 is half price, so they are allowing some credit.
You must have your reasons for not collecting the data with SurvCE or you would be doing so.
I don't know SurvCE well enough to say you can transfer directly from your instrument without going thru a PC.
My Sokkia TSs have onboard software that I have never used.
Using a data collector is easier on the keypads of the instrument and I really believe in touching the TS as little as possible to maintain stability of the gun over a point.
HP w/SMI is still my choice and I am beginning to collect with SurvCE on an AllegroCX.

I can't collect the data with SurvCE directly. I would if I could. There is NO way that I've found, or that anyone here knows of, to observe ANGLES ONLY in SurvCE. It's probably possible down under the hood...it does the Backsight after all without measuring distance. But I haven't found a way to do it.

I seem to remember that you can record angle only if you are going to intersect the point from another setup. We current shoot the point with reflectorless so I have not tried it in years.

Ed: I thought of that and tried resecting from bogus points (or all the same point), but it doesn't record those angles...it just uses the observations to calculate the coordinates of the resected point. Any other ideas?

Not that I'm going to go out and buy a reflectorless gun, but just out of curiosity, what happens with such a gun if you don't get a valid distance? Will it give you an angle only?

No, mine will not.
