I can't/won't make any excuses for the described problems other than to say I've made Dave Carlson (Executive VP of Programming and Product Development) aware of this thread with the goal of figuring out how we can improve our products and services. According to Dave:
>Some of the files in the update(s) are for the OEM engine and the only way to deliver these updates is by re-installing the OEM engine.
I, too, like the quick and compact size of software patches but suspect the Autodesk-supplied installer for the OEM product(s) does not contain the traditional "Update/Repair" option. As a result, it appears that updates to the OEM product require that the previous installation be first removed before an update can be applied.
It's also possible that the evolving changes to Windows might also have some impact on the software delivery mechanism. As an example, in Windows XP it was possible to directly deploy an update directly from Email into the "Program Files" folder structure. With Windows 7 (and I'm sure with Windows 8), I must first download a file to one of my personal folders (e.g. Downloads or Desktop) and then move/copy the file (with the necessary permissions) to the desired folder in the Program Files folder structure. Although I personally find this frustrating, I also suspect it is Microsoft's way of protecting us from ourselves.
As for operational flaws in the software routines, I/we can only ask that the issues get reported to members of the Carlson Technical Support Team as soon as they are encountered. It's been my experience that as soon as a culprit to a software bug has been identified, the Carlson programming team is quick to get it fixed and into an update as soon as possible.
As mentioned elsewhere, one of the quickest ways to migrate settings from an older installation is to use the Settings -- Carlson Configure -- Save As/Load routines. Packaging up all of your settings into a single CFG file allows the configuration to be placed on to a shared network folder (or Emailed to a desired person) so that the settings can be easily migrated into a new environment. The Settings -- Symbol Library also has similar functionality. Because of some of the OEM customization safe-guards employed by Autodesk, the default start-up template (DWT) file used by the Start-up Wizard is SURV.DWT. If you opt to use File -- New, I believe you can choose your own DWT file. Some additional information regarding this is/was found in the [msg=280761]Carlson Survey 2014 OEM[/msg] thread.
I agree. Sometimes I don't know why we even upgrade. Everything worked fine in CS2012, as it did in CS2008. I now have CS2015, and it's crashing more than the others did, and takes longer to process a rw5 and for points to insert points. Good deal.
:good:
I'm thinking some here had an installation problem and did not know it. I purchased Carlson Survey 2015 OEM in December 2014. To date I have not had one crash. I have had no problems with mtext. (I never really used it before, but the new company that I am now working for demands that all text be mtext. If you type just "a" it damn well better be mtext!!)
Overall I am VERY impressed with 2015. If you saved all your custom files, dwt'd ctb's fld'd and all the other goodies, your upgrade will be seamless.
Here's a list for standardization that our office developed. It does NOT cover all of the possibilities, but it got us up and running:
CARLSON CUSTOM FILES FOR STANDARDIZATION
These are the files in Carlson Survey that can be saved and reloaded onto other computers to provide a standard operational set up. These files are created by using the LOAD or SAVE AS buttons for custom files within the Carlson Survey package. Below is a list of files and where they should be stored. These files will also help you to rebuild your system after a crash.
THESE FILES GO INTO THE CARLSON PROJECT FOLDER IN THE SETTINGS FOLDER:

*These files have been updated and are ready for use as of February 28, 2015. The remaining folders can be created and used on individual computers and modified to the individual’s needs. The 4 files indicated should be used on all survey computes to maintain the current drafting standards.
If you maintain an updated copy of these files on a usb stick, your next upgrade will take less than an hour. Get a copy of the user's manual off the Carlson web site for a complete list of these files.
I don't think that my problems are due to installation.
Also, I see nothing so far that improves upon the last version. In fact I find some of the changes to be a step down.
