I have a hard time on construction projects that I continually bring in new points into carlson. I get points on a layer and then when I bring in the job file from the day it overwrites all my layers .
Wish list
1.A setting that will allow points in the dwg not to have the layer messed with when I bring a new file with same points or any other point characteristc.
2. A setting that will reference points by date brought in , not a layer but some other toggle. with a report if changed.
3. a setting that will not mess with the points leaders to fix overlaps in points leave them as I set them no matter how many times I bring the points.
4.with todays technology there is still a disconnect with office and field , I would like to walk in office and the data collect sync will dwg and vs versa as soon as data collector hits wifi the jobs are sync . lines, points whatever no sorting this or that it sends the whole project file .
I wish points had more elevations than one allowed .
Carlson works WAY better if you abandon the separate point layers, put all the points on one layer and use point groups for different days, features, etc.
I guess separate layers works, too. I just find it a clunky approach given the way the point attributes are "blocked".
I also prefer using the point groups. I don't use the automatic leaders so I can't speak to how it reacts in point groups. You can also prefix the layers to identify groups if you still like to use layer controls.
We use both F2F codes and crd files to control our point layering. Very satisfied with results.
A days work is imported to a CRD with the project number and date. Such as 14005-4-30-14.crd. This allows us to have a permanent record of individual project tasks. This is what is imported into the drawing. I think this would solve your problem of all the points changing. Once in the drawing we then activate the main project CRD which has all points. In this case it would be called 14005-001. Import 14005-4-30-14 into this file and you have all your cords to work with.
We also use F2F codes to place the points on the layers correctly. Once you become accustomed to having a code for every point it works effortlessly. In the past I had used point groups but this works seamlessly and with multiple users also.
The Hack
Does Carlson have a toggle such as Land Desktop that as you are importing points will allow you to skip over any points that already exist in the database?
We do this all the time with Land Desktop and when we bring the points in it states that "duplicate points exist" and one of the prompts is "Skip All".
Basically allows us to dump an entire job out to crews and when we bring it back in it only imports new points.
We use layers for all of our points that are based on the date they were obtained such as PTS-4-30-14 or PTS-STAKED-4-14-14. I'm sure I could also use groups but I love being able to turn that layer on and see what was done on that day. Not a big fan of taking points in and out of a drawing and with the speed of the computers these days we don't really need to.
Curious how others handle this.
