I have had an intermittent issue with Carlson partially freezing on my computer for a while now. It's kinda weird, it will stop accepting commands, I can still type into the command line, but if I hit "Enter" the text just stays in the command line entry line and the command is ignored. I can still pan around and click the "save" button but other buttons dont work. When this happens I save, shut down the program and reboot, and then it works fine for awhile. Sometimes I will get this issue several times a day and sometimes I can go a week without it happening. In an effort to fix it I have reformated my harddrive and done a fresh install of Windows 10, and a fresh install of carlson, Ive updated my video card, have up to date drivers and firmware etc.?ÿ

I thought maybe it was just my machine, or maybe a hardware issue but I'm using a different computer today and its happening again. Has anyone else had that happen? I'm on 2019 Carlson with Intellicad, using windows 10 64bit.

Updates can take away something from the registry of your computer that keeps Carlson working properly.

Personally and for that very reason, I do not have e Carlson running on a computer that is hooked up to the internet.

It has to do with having everything on one computer, every program you use.

The purpose of updates is to keep all the Microsoft stuff working and sometimes that sacrifices what is on there to keep Carlson working.

I have a dedicated Carlson computer that once it is up and running, it is disconnected from the internet.

@a-harris

Interesting strategy. Seems like an extreme measure, but if it works, it works. I had heard that when windows 10 was newer, the windows 10 updates would cause issues with Carlson registration. I thought that issue had been solved well before 2019 though.

as was suggested by @a-harris about using a dedicated machine, I would further suggest that you do a clean install of the OS again but this time run any updates on windows 10. Leave it running overnight to download all the service packs. Once everything is installed then install your survey software. If everything is running ok then disconnect it from the internet and leave it as-is.

@a-harris   I have not connected my work computer to the internet in three years and it has worked fast and flawless; while my super powerful windows 10 computer suffers some degenerative episode every week. My new equipment connects instantly, new software loads without effort and my wired network never fails on my old Internetlesss work computer; while my new equipment will not talk to my fast connected power station, nor does software load without fiddling, nor does my wired network stay connect through signoff, reboot or turnoff.  The internet is the root of all evil of which we can not do without. Thanks for letting a like mind vent.

Do you have a touchscreen machine? Even if not, thereƒ??s a toggle somewhere in windows system settings that sometimes turns on with an update- your problems sound very much like what Iƒ??ve experienced subsequent to windows updates that turn the touchscreen back on.

@flyin-solo

I'm not using a touchscreen, we have two desktop computers in the office running dual Dell monitors. I see a setting in Windows for "Tablet Mode" is that what your talking about? It is turned off though.

I have a laptop with Carlson Survey on it that has never crashed or had any issues, its not a touchscreen either though. However the laptop is still running 2018 Carlson will Intellicad 8.3. The desktops are running Carlson 2019 with Intellicad 9.  I'm wondering if the Carlson version has anything to do with it, or it could be the fact that the laptop is newer and faster hardware. The laptop in a higher end 8th Gen i7(8650U), my primary desktop is 4th gen i5 (4670k) I would think they are both good enough but it could be a contributing factor, I dont know.

If you click Help -- About Carlson, what is your Build Number compared to the YYMMDD build date of 191220 (2019-Dec-20)? If you have something earlier than this, you can get a latest build at the Carlson Software 2019 Download URL:

http://www.carlsonsw.com/support/software-downloads/?product=Carlson&version=2019

If this is the version you have, it's possible an anti-virus scanner is getting in way or possibly a faulty or failing RAM chip. Or, you might try a one-time right+click on Carlson icon on your Desktop and choosing the Run As Administrator option. Provide the Administration password to your computer if challenged for one. Run the software normally after that to see if this solves the problem.

I hope this information helps.

@ladd-nelson

Thanks for the suggestions Ladd. I am using build number 191220. The only virus software I have is that built into Windows 10. I will try the Run as Admin suggestion and look into my RAM chips.

So in conclusion, I could not figure out a software solution to the crashes. I assembled a new pretty high end computer, hoping that would help, and after a week not a single crash. Hopefully its smooth sailing from here on out, but so far so good.?ÿ

Carlson and many other programs figured out how to do things with many of the embedded commands within Windows, heck this goes all the way back to DOS. In my belief Microsoft goes out of it's way to subtlety change the way those commands work because they cannot see any other company having success in their house. From time to time I find an update that unknowingly occurred on my computer and I have to order Windows to strep back a notch. Microsoft has said they no longer support Windows 7, but they keep doing updates to fix things that are not broken in the hopes that eventually you have to pay for another upgrade. Practically everything I use in Carlson today I could do on my DOS 5 computer and it was faster than I could think and I could turn it on and off with the flick of a switch.
