I am thinking of taking a week off sometime at the begiining of the year and going to Carlson College. I have a lot of questions and would like to get some additional training when it comes to software.

Has any body had any experience with Carlson College? Any suggestions?

I have not had any experience, but I "believe" that cptdent has. He speaks highly of their training.

I would love to attend one of their training sessions. I recently purchased a set of training manuals from That CAD Girl, and look forward to sitting down with them soon to start customizing my Carlson software. I plan on upgrading from Carlson Survey 2008 OEM to Carlson Survey 2016 OEM. Looking forward to the upgrade to take advantage of the improvements. I have demoed 2015, both the Intellicad and OEM versions, and I prefer the OEM version much better.

Jimmy, what does OEM mean? Does it mean AutoCAD instead of IntelliCAD? Thanks.

OEM typically means "Original equipment manufacturer". In this case Autodesk allows developers to use parts of their engine (for a fee) to create a closed application they can distribute. In the case of Survey OEM it is parts of AutoCAD plus the Survey functionality Carlson chose to include. I don't think add-on developers can pick and choose the commands they want, they come in categorical batches.

Most importantly when you are looking at an "OEM" product is that it is closed, you can't even load a free lisp you find on the web.

I haven't used it since tech support has been so good; however, I'm sure there is quite a lot that one could learn from it.

I know it is a way from Georgia, but Carlson's user conference is happening at the end of February in Las Vegas. Registration is $750 and they are offering a free software fundamentals book by Rick Ellis if you register by the end of October. There are three learning tracks with what look to be very good subjects.

Carlson Software - Carlson User Conference
Carlson Software - Carlson User Conference

Carlson College? It's worth its weight in gold!!!.
Harry Ward has Harken-Reider in Front Royal, Virginia and offers a top notch training session. That's the first one I went too and I plan to return one day for refresher and upgrade training. (Front Royal is a VERY interesting city to visit. If you are of the Baptist persuasion, Brother Mark Jordon is an awesome minister. I grew up with him and his wife in Meridian, Mississippi. He TOO understands how traumatic it is for a teen to have a Hillman Minx as your first car!!)
That CADGIRL offers some great training sessions too. Jennifer has a way of presenting the materials in such a way that it is all easily understandable. PLUS her training manuals cannot be beaten!!
I would highly recommend a 4 or 5 day session at either place.
I also have heard that training is available at Carlson Headquarters in Maysville, KY. That's another VERY interesting little town to wander through after class. The Crow Bar is awesome!!
You have several options, but none are cheap, especially when you add travel and motel costs. A week will run you a little over $2,000 total, but I guarantee you that it will be the BEST money you will ever spend. You will recoup those costs in increased productivity in less than a year. (AND such job related training sessions are tax deductible.)
If all else fails, come on down to Clinton , MS and I'll teach you what I know. That ought to be worth at least a buck two eighty in anybody's book.
