Hey folks, was wondering how difficult it is to turn intelligent .dwg data into shape files, and vice versa.
For example, is it easier to go from one to the other?
Just purchased a new laptop and will be loading Carlson Civil Suite 2016 and will be doing work with one of the local towns' database (ESRI Arc GIS). They are concerned the data we compile may not be compatible with their GIS, but I need to convince them it will.
I can't see this being too difficult and probably automated given the advances these two software platforms made to each other over the past few years. Unfortunately, I'm sill working in LDD '04.
Carlson Survey has an export to ESRI shapefile. Not sure if the civil suite has the same. Never used it myself.

You might explore the Carlson GIS Export DWG File with Esri MSC command and perhaps skip the SHP file process.
I would take a look at Safe Software's FME. This can convert to and from a lot of file types and set up to run in processes. Esri has the ability to to export to DWG and DXF as well within ArcMap.
Not getting anywhere. New laptop, new operating system (win 10), new version of cad (Intelicad) New civil add-on (Carlson Civil Suite 2016) and just downloaded ESRI Arc GIS for first use. I believe I set myself up for trouble.
Anyway, while using the simple Export ESRI SHP file from GIS Data pulldown allows me to export data, but it warns me "No Features are selected for Export to SHP!
Town is ready to award us this contract, but I have to convince them exporting data into their GIS database is simple.
Eureka!
I got it to work somehow! I'll hopefully follow up this post tomorrow with my solution. To sum it up, perseverance.
Do you remember what your solution was? I just tried to use "Export Esri Shp file" for the first time in about 6 months and got the "No features are selected for export to shp" message, even though it use to work for me. I just got a new computer using Windows 10, and I am wondering if that has something to do with it.
We are having the same problem but I think we were able to export to shp a few months. We??ve had Win 10 for 2 years I think?ÿ

The workflow I use is to create a closed polyline of the feature I want to make a shape, then save as an ACAD block. I then add this to my ArcMap session. Then use Arctoolbox,?ÿchoose Data Management Tools/Features/Feature to Polygon.
In the Feature to Polygon window: in Input Features browse to the ACAD block?ÿ you added, in Output feature: browse to save your shapefile, in Environments/output Coordinates/output coordinate system,

Hey is there an update to this link? It appears broken, am now in the situation where I would need to convert some features to GIS files.
The current (2019) link to the Export DWG File with Esri MSC?ÿcommand is provided per request.
