Ok excuse my ignorance on this subject... I used to have people that took care of this for me. Now that I am solo...well you know.
I have Autocad 2007 with Carlson embedded that came with all the equipment I bought. I have been getting by with it. I have had 2 occasions that I needed and aerial background behind my drawing. Do I have the capability to do this? I had Carlson Survey in Autocad14 and Civil3D in a former life and could do it. I would also like to export to .kmz from Autocad also. Is there an inexpensive solution to this or am I going to have to upgrade?
I m guessing the 2007 has the capability, I just probably don't know how to get there. Thanks

You might try Spatial Manager for AutoCAD. I think it works with vanilla CAD, but not sure if back to 2007. spatialmanager.com (I'm not affiliated).
Dang it. 2008 was the cut off. I downloaded it anyway to try and see if it would load and the install fails. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Edit: just saw the desktop version... gonna download that trial and see if I can do it through dxfs between the two programs... standby
Type image and insert into drawing, you will need to scale and position. I don't think regular AutoCad will recognize a Geo reference file unless you have AutoCad Map. You might look at Carlson GIS

Did you try GIS -> place image by world file
If you need a world file, try QGIS.

I couldnt figure out Spatial Manager...I was able to use QGIS to clip out a portion of an image I downloaded from TNRIS. I then used Carlson commands Maketfw and Geotiff to bring in the image. The image was in meters so I scaled and translated my coord file and drawing. I then used regular old AutoCad imageclip command to get it down to the size I wanted. In the end, I have a workable process to accomplish what I wanted and I didnt spend a dime.
Thanks for all the advice. I will still give spatial manager another go... I still want to go CAD to kmz
I was in the same boat 8 almost 10 years ago with Carlson. I ended up moving to TraversePC. It takes a georeferenced file with a simple insert picture command. The best technical support I have experienced and priced righ tfor all the ability.
We use Plex Earth 3 to bring in Google Earth images and Bing maps images. It will also publish to Google Earth.
Try MAPIINSERT (yes, that's two "i"s), which is an Autocad command that will insert the image. I believe it's a standard Autocad command, although it may only be available in ACAD Map 3d, I can't remember. If you have a world file (doesn't TNRIS have world files?), just hit enter at the image correlation dialog box (after you've selected the image from it's location on your PC) and it will insert to the correct location, or you can edit the x,y,z coordinates and scale it also. Alternatively, you can translate and scale it afterword as you did.
