I'm on a machine at a client's office with 2012 C3D. I'm fairly AutoCad (older versions) familiar, but this things got me going...
I'm used to double-clicking on text to edit. I can do that in this C3D, but I can only edit it once. If I try to edit that particular text entity again it tells me "object is open for read".
Once that happens, you can't move that entity, edit it, erase it or anything. You can save the drawing, open it back up and everything's good to go, until you edit another entity and then want to move it or modify it in some way.
I bet I've saved this dwg a hunnert times. Anybody out there smarter than me?
Is there a toggle somewhere I'm missing?
IS IT MTEXT OR ASSOCIATED WITH A 3D OBJECT? SEEMS LIKE THERE MIGHT BE A DIALOG BOX OPENING SOMEWHERE AND HIDING ON YOU.
This is one of the glitches with C3D. It does not like single line text. Under the express pull down go to text -> convert text to mtext. Should fix your problem.

It's a general ACad bug, not specific to Civil3D and it has been reported since they introduced Annotative text. Check this thread for more information.
Sinc's legacy lives on. He was one of the first posters on the linked thread.
Not saying it doesn't happen outside of C3D but I haven't seen the issue until I started using C3D.
Thanks..
Sinc...Wherever you are...
entering "audit" and answering "N" cleans the entity off of the "..open for read" status.
BTW - This has never happened when using mtext or ddedit, just when double-clicked.:-S
Civil 3D 2012
AutoDesk has perpetrated a fraud upon its users. The program stinks to put it mildly. Nothing is easy or intuitive on any level.
And you can bet the next update will alter menus and change terms etc.
Yuck!
Civil 3D 2012
I agree, Chuck.
I think it was '83 when I first used 1.4, and we quickly jumped to 2.0. We held out a few years and picked up R10. The good old days when you could step outside and smoke while a dwg regenerated.
Then came R12...the rest is a blur.
Anyway, our office is fully licensed for Bentley nowadays. We have a number of seats of MicroStation and a cute little (cheap) program called "Power Draft" which is basically a neutered MicroStation that works great for 2D print production.
AutoCAD leaves me frustrated anymore. It was once a good product for my needs, but no more.

While I can't say I am a fan of their yearly licensing upgrades and such I can say that we work 3 times as fast with Civil3d then we ever could with LDD. It is by no means perfect and it does frustrate me at times. It is a very complex program that requires tons of setup and constant tweaking of procedures, styles, etc...
It is a completely different piece of software than LDD, the only similarity is Autodesk.
