I need a little help extracting some information from a .job file. It has been requested that I provide a file with the point name, and time the point was collected. I know I can manually go through the file in Access and see this, but there are about 4600 points (continuous topo of approx. 12 miles of a rail line and a few locations of various things along the way). Any help would be appreciated.

You probably already did this...use the ascii file generator utility to create a .jxl file, which is ascii but xml format. That has all of the data "translated" from binary to ascii, including time to the second for each shot. Of course, gps data always has the times, but the .jxl file also has times for the conventional shots.

Once again, I wish Trimble would not get so proprietary with their formats. As far as I know, there is no public document that tells you what is in a .job file. I always export a .dc file as well, but that does not have the times of the shots.

John,

I brought the .job file into TBC and created a custom export format that had the point name and the time of the observation. I exported this as a .csv file and just merged it with the original .csv of the locations. We had a GoPro mounted on the hood of the truck as we hi-railed the line. They wanted the times of the observations to link parts of the video geographically.

Keep in mind that GPS time and UTC time are different due to leap seconds. I think it's currently 16 seconds, not sure. That may not matter for your purposes.

Good to know that export is available. I don't use TBC for anything other than GPS processing, I process all the RTK/VRS/conventional data outside of TBC in my own software (except for the adjustment-I use Geolab or star*net).

How do you sync the clocks? I have tried to get a time sync program for windows mobile (TSC2), but haven't been able to get it to work reliably. My camera has GPS, but it won't set the clock (why not???). My new DC (Yuma 2 running windows 7) of course can be sync'd very easily.

Oh, I reread your post. You have GPS obs, not total station data. So that doesn't need sync'ing.

You have to go through and set up a custom export format. There are a lot of options on what can be exported. I have never had to this before and I am not the one doing the actual work. The video was taken by a GIS professional 😉 he is also the one that requested the file with the times of the observations. It was a really interesting conversation as we hi-railed the line, I am sure that someone that is used to working with 1-3 meter accuracies can live with or warp the data enough to live with the time not being synced.
