Took a few pics from our condo several years ago. Can you identify what they are??ÿ ??ÿ

Manta 2
Manta 3
Manta 6

We have plenty of Black tip, Thresher, and Spinner sharks around when mulet, menhaden, and ballyhoo are schooling.

What say you??ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ (I have never seen these so close to shore)?ÿ?ÿ

@just-a-surveyor

Nope. FYI a?ÿbottlenose dolphin and a?ÿporpoise are basically the same, except for their colors.?ÿ ??ÿ

@andy-j you can't play because I am sure you know these are.?ÿ ??ÿ

Manta ray?

I do a lot of sea kayaking and occasionally have had fleeing fish get things wrong and jump into the boat. And once I had one of these rays leap parallel to the boat, 1m away, and I thought "I'm glad you didn't get that wrong".

@richard-imrie

You got it Richard.

Those are Manta Rays feeding on small crustaceans, sand fleas/sand bugs* in less than five feet of water. The Rays ƒ??flapƒ? their wings near the bottom to stir them up so as to consume them. Rays are usually in deep water consuming plankton as their primary diet but do ingest small fish and crustaceans. The year I took the pics there was an abnormally high influx of sand bugs all along shallow waters (North Atlantic-New Smyrna Beach FL) for about a mile or so. There were at least 5 rays and all raising hell with the stirred up bugs.

The Beach Patrol launched a zodiac to observe them from a distance and estimated the largest to have a 12ƒ?? wing span. It was a beautiful sight to see. Umm, if you ocean Kayak and one of them decides to land on you RIP.?ÿ ??ÿ
