Did it work so good that Microsoft decided to axe it and move on to Win 10?

They decided to skip over W9 and call it Windows 10. No real explaination. One suggestion is that various programs checking for operating system version would look for Windows 9 and think they had found Windows 95 or 98 and terminate.

It's expected to be ready for general distribution in late spring '15, although no definite date has been announced. It is possible that it will be free to Windows 8 users.

Nice. Perhaps they will dump the #%^$#^$#@@#@$@%&%^*( Win8 interface for desktop machines and keep that swill for tablets and phones.

They basically said that it will be so good that it should go straight on to 10.

When you look at it, it looks a lot like 7 without all the fancy menus and window frames. But the functionality is sounding pretty snazzy. I signed up for the technical preview, but haven't installed it yet.

Mistaking later versions for 95 or 98 seems unlikely for machines. The internal number that software installations check for is different from the marketing departments name for a version. eg: my Windows XP calls itself version 5.1 build 2600, my Windows 7 calls itself version 6.1 build 7601.
It is more likely that this same marketing department assumes that WE are too dense to seperate the versions correctly in chrono-order.

Thanks Wendell.
That's what I wanted to here!!!! Get rid of that damnable Win8 interface!! It never belonged on a desktop to begin with - IMHEO (In My Highly Experienced Opinion).

I have heard that internally, staff within Microsoft were referring to the massive amount of people abandoning windows 8 to go to windows 7 as the "windows 9 upgrade".. All rather tongue in cheek of course, but it seems to have stuck.

When 10 comes out it should be good. Windows is kinda like Star Trek movies...... Every second one sucks.

Really, I am just waiting for "windows classic", which would be a rerelease of xp. (Completely fictitious.... Don't get your hopes up)

I ran XP for ten years, finally gave it up last Spring. I actually like 7 pro, had no problems making the switch. I did buy a lot more powerful computer w/SSD, starts up very quick compared to the old XP. Since 10 is supposed to be souped up 7 I might buy in.

Windows 7 checked for updates this morning and added an Icon to the right (Notification area) of the task bar. White Windows flag, simple outline with vertical and horizontal dividing lines. Moving the cursor over it prompts "Get Windows 10" left clicking opens a window to reserve a free copy and initiate install. While right clicking gives 3 additional options.
