Yikes!
And these persons were in 'responsible' positions?
a drunk surveyor? [sarcasm]i've never heard of such a thing[/sarcasm]
one of the first party chiefs i worked for carried a worn leather briefcase everywhere he went. after a couple of weeks i realized i never saw him put anything into or take anything out of the briefcase. they don't call me snoop for nothing. after a couple of days of watching and waiting for my opportunity he left the case in the van when he went into a gas station to take a dump. the only thing i found in the briefcase: 2 pints of popov vodka and some tic tacs.
throw the book at them.
they make the rest of us look bad.
:good:
Idiots probably had the state truck parked in plain sight.
I'm a retired state employee and guys like this ruin things for the rest of us.
I agree!
As a former Caltronian, this kind of behavior is what gets Caltrans, state employees and all surveyors a bad name.
In reality, some of the very best surveyors I have had the priviledge of working with are/were at Caltrans.
Yes, our trucks are not exactly unnoticeable.
Caltrans trucks are white with an orange stripe and "Caltrans" logs all over them.
They used to call it "Big Orange" because the trucks were orange.
A few years ago one of the local news teams followed government employees around for hours on end getting videotape of them fishing for hours, sleeping all day in the trucks, going into strip bars for 2 hour lunches, etc...
I tracked through the links to the news video, which was several minutes long. Yes, these boneheads drove state trucks right to the restaurant. It was a burger and beer joint with drive up service like the old A&Ws, and an outdoor seating area.
The news crew apparently watched for these Caltrans employees at this place for a few days, and after 3 days in a row of the same behavior, the news crew confronted them.
Caltrans officials said they might fire them if their investigation finds that the employees are actually guilty of "what the video alleges."
What the video alleges? Alleges? Unless my command of the English language is far less than I think it is, a video can only show or not show, and is entirely incapable of alleging anything. Seems to me a 5 minute investigation would probably be sufficient. Watch the video, verify the time stamp, check with their supervisor to see if they were on duty. On duty, no question at all. Can 'em! Off duty, discuss options of whether it's better to fire or suspend. I'd still go for firing. Drinking a half gallon of beer or more and then getting behind the wheel of the company truck, even if off duty (some Caltrans surveyors drive truck home at night for legitimate reasons) is a firing offense, IMO.

They'd probably get much better gas mileage if they'd take the logs off.
maybe that's where they went wrong, logs instead of logos.
RE: Caltrans Drinking
Similar incidents were happening at the WSDOT project office. It was a shared venture between Kiewit, General and Manson contractors, and WSDOT.
Two Caltrans surveyor supervisors drinking>CA has it made
You guys have drive up beer and burger joints??
I'm kind of envious!
Hell, if I lived in Cali, I'd probably drink too!

We were in the Starbucks drive through (against my will) and my Wife asked me if I wanted anything.
I said, yes, I would like an Irish Coffee. She said they don't sell that here.
So it didn't work at Starbucky 😉
