I have not upgraded to a smart phone yet. I have a Carlson Explorer 2 DC, which I tether to my cell phone with verizon service.
I pay the broadband service. It works well. If I upgrade to the smartphone (droid or Blackberry) can I still tether to the phone through DUN-
it seems I can with some software with the Droid. Will I have to pay anything extra through my plan to do this?
Also, I am investigating the booster capablities because the new phones do not have cable connections to the Wilson boosters.
But it seems Wilson has new stuff for that.
This is for using a RTN RTK Network
Thanks for any knowledge on this subject.
I believe you can do that with a Droid, but Verizon charges an extra fee for tethering. If you root your phone and install a tethering app, you can do it for free until Verizon catches you. The spike in bandwidth will surely tip them off.
I don't think that my Droid X will work as a Bluetooth DUN tether...but it works fine to access the internet or a VRS using the 3G Hotspot option....
Be careful about exactly which phone you propose to purchase and check to make sure that the type of service you need to use is actually supported by that phone and that provider. Factory specs list what the phone is capable of serving, but the service provider will only activate what they choose to support.
Such is our experience with the LSU GULFNet RTN in Louisiana.
