My almost-21-year-old desk chair isn't treating my back well these days, so I'm in the market for a new one. The array of available choices is a bit overwhelming, both in style and price, so I'm looking to narrow it down. Any recommendations?
Herman Miller Aeron chair is by far the best, most back friendly chair I have ever used.

How cool, they let you download a 3D version of their chairs, I guess in case you want to see what your old *+*$ looks like in it digitally.
I have an Aeron chair in my office in Nome. Not sure what model I have but they are good on the back, albeit a little stiff on the @$$!

Now here's something really snazzy that I'd not buy:
It would take off tooooo much pressure from my thought centre !
Seriously, I find a foam seat cover pad helps.

+1 on the Aeron Chair. I lucked out and had a neighbor that I did a lot of handyman type stuff for. She had one that she didn't use and when she moved she gave it to me. It was brand new still in the wrapper. 😀
The Aeron seems to elicit love or hate, with not much in between. There are many reviews online that point out the hard front edge, which can cause nerve and circulation issues.
In general, it seems that any old chair will do for short spans of time, but when it comes to something you spend many hours in, you can't know for sure if it'll be a good fit until you've lived with it for awhile. That makes the purchasing decision pretty onerous from my perspective; I'm one of those guys who wants to make a decision and move on.
Sigh.
I never had that problem.
The Aeron comes in different sizes so maybe unhappy users have the wrong size.
Also the Aeron comes with a lengthy set of instructions on how to set it up for you. If you just use it out of the box you might not have good results.
A former colleague swore by one of those exercise balls. Simple and inexpensive and she said it helped with the back pain.
I have a Steelcase chair that was given to me by a relative who works in office furniture. It is an older model. I checked on their website and it looks like they cost about $1000. I would never have spent that. It is a fine product though .
It has improved my quality of life.
No specific recommendations, but I suggest that you should be looking at having 2 chairs. There are "task" chairs that keep you sitting upright for working at the computer, and their are "executive" chairs for sitting back and talking on the phone. If you are having trouble with your back, and having 2 chairs is impractical. I suggest you favor the task chair style.
You might take a look at this site. We have a couple of the executive models. Pricey, but adjustable in many ways and directions, and built to last. If there's a Relax the Back store in your area, they often have some of them.
Best,
Henry
Steelcase
I bought three new steelcase chairs about 6 years ago.. Yes, they are pricey, but they felt so much better than all the others. And even at the price, if you think of how many hours you spend "making money" in them, it's well worth it.
You can pry mine from my cold dead butt!
Steelcase
I also use Steelcase and would never part with mine. They are worth the extra money

Bought a used one from EBAY about 10 years ago. Built to last.
