I helped my dad restore both an Allis-Chalmers WD and C.
The WD was a tricycle front end and I was the lucky one who got to drive it to our home which was about a 15 mile trip, one way, no cab, in February. Actually, I offered to drive it home and appreciate the experience but man it was COLD! I ran out of gas 3-4 times.
Later, when it was a bit warmer, I got to drive it to a local tire shop to get some new kicks for the ol gal. Loved driving that tractor. Bladed the drive during the winter a couple of times while dad was working. Almost took the carport out once...that hand clutch and independent rear braking system was a little tricky. LOL
@squirl I helped rebuild a John Deere 3010 (+/- 1965 model).?ÿ We had to rebuild the engine because it blew a head gasket, overheated (temp gauge never worked) and cracked a cylinder sleeve.?ÿ Of course I was the one driving it when it happened.?ÿ One of my father's friends was a machinist and mechanic who could fix anything so the two of them did most of the work.?ÿ My main job was to clean all the rings slots in the pistons so new rings could be installed.?ÿ Do you know how bad diesel stings when it gets into scraped knuckles? 50+ years later that old tractor is still running though.
Andy
They have a Corn and Apple Festival in Morden, Manitoba. My Aunt was first runner up in the beauty contest, back in the early 70's.
Not sure why it's corn and apple; never seen either one grown in the area...
Dang, Andy.?ÿ The young bucks on here must think of us as being like Statler and Waldorf from The Muppet Show.?ÿ Sitting in the balcony and shouting at the upstarts below them.
When we start writing about things from 50 or 60 or more years ago they start rolling their eyes.?ÿ They assume we can't possibly be keeping up with the modern world.?ÿ In fact, they should appreciate our input as we have gone from oversized pencils and Big Chief tablets to texting back and forth with others present at some boring meeting.?ÿ Imagine the range of technological advances they will experience over the coming decades.
I have two good friends who are 91 and still farming every day.?ÿ Neither leaves the house without their cell phone.?ÿ Neither of them had a telephone of any kind in their childhood home.
Now that I'm feeling ancient, I will share something astounding when you think about it.
My grandmother was born in 1893 and the youngest of my grandparents.?ÿ She became close friends with an old couple in her church.?ÿ Sometimes when I was spending a few days with her we would visit the Chrisman's at their home on the other side of town.?ÿ They still kept milk goats in their backyard for their daily needs.?ÿ Mr. Chrisman went by U.G.?ÿ He was born in 1873 and was named for a certain famous general and U.S. President.?ÿ Their oldest son's name was Garland.
Recently, I completed a survey for a fellow in his 30's just a few miles from where Garland lived with his wife, seven daughters and one son.?ÿ Discovered my client's middle name is Garland.?ÿ Will have to ask him if he is somehow related to the Chrisman family.
While doing some digging on my own to find a link, I discovered that Ulysses Grant Chrisman's father was born in 1820.?ÿ That led to the realization that I knew someone whose father would be 202 years old today.
@dougie?ÿ
Went to a small (?) town festival not far from Houston, Texas one time in the 1980's.?ÿ They were celebrating strawberries in connection with their community.?ÿ There were many opportunities to purchase strawberries.?ÿ Every container, though, proudly declared: Product of California.
I knew a fellow from Crystal City, Texas who was proud of their Spinach Festival.

Poor camera angle, I must say.
...but all eyes were on her!
If you swing through my hometown, I'll buy the beers!?ÿ?ÿ
