Last time I was in Vegas (2010) I stayed at the Aria. It was pretty nice, really good tapas restaurant in the lobby.

I think it's sort of the "fourth wave" Vegas hotel:

1. Old School Mob Vegas
2. Big Casino Vegas
3. Family Vegas (a horrible idea)
4. Modern Hipster extension of LA Vegas

I would recommend going to Hoover Dam and taking the tour there. Try to catch a show. If you are Beatles fans, check out the Beatles Love show by Cirque Du Soleil.

Places to stay - you can sometimes find timeshare rooms available on Hotels.com for a reasonable price that have little to no casino area in them. I think there's a Hilton timeshare property up by the Sahara that I have stayed at before that was very nice and no casino at all except for a small room with about 10 slot machines. I forget what they were called, I think Hilton Grand Vacation.

You would probably see all you wanted and more by simply walking along the strip.

You never know what shows you might catch, I was riding in a taxi one trip and saw that Jeff Beck was at the Thomas & Mack center that night; scored a ticket in about the 13th row.

thanks for the ideas. I booked 2 nights at New York, New York ... Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Park the car and kick back should work for me.

If it's still there, the Luxor has an artifacts of the Titanic exhibit, it two hotels down from NYNY and there's a monorail from Excalibur. Parts of the exhibit are set up like your actually on board. I found it to be very interesting. NYNY has an Irish Pub that makes a nice rib eye that I paired with an English Amber. I agree that just walking up & down the strip can be entertaining. As an aside I tell everyone the best part of our trip was ticking off the timeshare salesman.

I'd say stop by for coffee and an autograph with my sister-in-law (pictured below, on the right) but I doubt she'd appreciate the surprise visit.

FWIW, the "Old Strip" (Fremont Street) is worth visiting with the overhead light show.

Since your staying at New York New York, take a ride on that roller coaster on top of it. I got talked into that back in March.
Be sure to catch the Bellagio fountain and the volcano show in front of the Mirage. Walk through Paris and look up at the sky under the Eiffel Tower, and take a gondola ride through the canals at The Venetian. Go in Caesars and see if you can find your way out. Walk the strip from one end to the other, but be prepared for sore legs the next day. Lots of stairs and escalators up and over the cross streets.

Aside from the spectacle of Las Vegas, especially at night, there are some interesting areas outside the strip. They include the Red Rocks National Conservation Area (rock formations, rock climbing),the Valley of Fire State Park (petroglyphs), Mount Charleston (often 30 degrees cooler than the Strip). The National Atomic Testing Museum and the Mob Museum are worth an hour or so.

There is a zip line along Fremont Street, thrill rides atop the Stratosphere Tower and indoor skydiving if you are adventurous.

I noticed the weather forecast for the upcoming weekend includes temps in the 110s.
