Lookey what I got:

It has Elk antler handle. It has Obsidian blade. Brady Epperson, Flintknapper extraordinaire made it. He's on Face Book, if you want to see more of his work. He lives in Kirby AR. Send him a friendship request, if you like. He MADE that blade. He does some of the finest flintknapping I have ever seen.

He glued the blade in with 5 min epoxy, just a little, to hold it in place. Then, coated the whole Antler with 24 hr epoxy, to seal it up. It is a skinning knife, and hide scraper. It's just one of the nicest things I have ever gotten.
Thanks Brady!
Nate

That's cool. From my school days I remember obsidian can be sharper than surgical steel.

Nice pocket knife Nate. Was it a gift from your little surveyors?

Happy belated birthday.

Not really. I had met Brady at the County Fair, where he had a booth set up. He spent an hr with me, and one of my kids, knapping out an arrowhead. I made a donation for his work. Gave the nice arrow head to a local grandmother, who plans to hide it in her garden, when her grandkids come...
Well, I had an extra hour, one day, and stopped by, and described what I wanted him to make... and, he did NOT follow my ideas... took off on his own, and made something alot nicer... Brought it by for my birthday... And, I simply donated to his work. Brady is a very humble guy who works very hard. I respect him, and try to encourage him. He is a master of his craft.
Needless to say, his work speaks for itself.

Now that is country.........and a prized possession.

I've only used a 431- 4 1/2in Case XX that dad gave me.

Be sure you put that in a leather case before you pocket it.

After Brady made my blade, others expressed interest in blades. So, here is a recent set of blades he made.
I find such things fascinating.

Amazing talent.

I hear they are VERY sharp. What happens over time, say when skinning a large animal? Do they get dull? Can they be dressed up over and over? Curious.

Those are gorgeous Nate. Looks lot like an ulu. Friend of mine knaps and uses them for skinning out fur bearers, less likely to accidently slice through the hide he says. Sharper than surgical steel. Gets a bit dull just pressure flake the edge with a tip of antler to put a fresh edge on. Blade gets smaller over time, gets too small toss it and knap a new one. Around here obsidian is pretty rare and the natives in old days would use even the smallest chips, microblades archaeologist call them, mounted into a wood shaft. Took many thousands of hours of practice to achieve that level of knapping.

Check this out if you like this kind of stuff. My knapping friend turned me onto it.

That's what he called it... an ulu. Eskimo skinning tool.

You carefully chip another edge onto it. Deer antler for the purist, and a piece of hard copper, with a sharpened point, for the modernist.
He has loads of fine work.

Adam, he has data on his phone. He does not have regular telephone. FB is his only direct connect... but he likes it, because he can put a pic up, and both view it... and he's handy with it. However, he lives near his mom, and she has phone. I'll find her number, and txt it to you.
OK?
