WHAT!!! Columbus day? for what??? He never set foot in north America. All that pip squeak hit was the Caribbean's.
Pseudo historians would give that credit to Amerigo Vespucci (sp? all around).
Excuse me. The Icelanders were here 400 years before these blokes..
Pardon me for using the Queen's English on that "bloke" thing.
They have by far the earliest records still in existence of them being in today's north eastern America. If I'm correct it was Lief Erickson (son of Erik the red) that did that. Or perhaps it was some of his peoples.
Columbus Day is a bull squirt holiday and should be abolished based on proven historical and archeological findings.
The TRUE explorers were the "Norhtlanders". They didn't need no Queen sucking up and backing. They just did it. They were curious and curiouser plain and simple.
Guess I won't getting any mail today then. Suppose any other government thing should shut down as well.
MAPS! The Norse were mapping the NE of America 400 years before Columbus. (I won't capilatize his name any more because he doesn't deserve it)
And that's my 0400 hours rant.

He even missed the whole batch of Leeward Islands and finally crashed into the Dominican Republic. (Too much rum on board.) 😉

It's Thanksgiving Day in Canada. I enjoyed a big turkey dinner Saturday night.
Thanksgiving Day in Canada
Uh, Vespucci never left Vespucciville. He was a cartograper drafting the results of the various field crews.
I heard it was the Phoenicians who lead the exploring towards the setting sun. And don't overlook the Polynesians in Kon-Tiki-like transports who lead the exploring towards the rising sun.
Or maybe it was the Far Northeast Asians out for a stroll on a rocky ridge who got cut off from home.
"Vespucci"
I always thought he invented a motor scooter that one could purchase then join the Hells Angels.;-)
God bless Vespucciland. (Firesign Theatre)
I don’t know about all this Columbus bashing. Yes, it is a indubitable fact that Columbus did not ‘discover” North America but you should check some of your vent because you are wrong with your facts.
Yes, the Norsemen, Celtic Monks, Basque whalers etc. stepped on North American shores before the voyages of Columbus.
But, it was Columbus as a navigator and exploration leader that forever changer the history of Western civilization. Besides science discoveries, the four voyages with commercial ships for better or worse led to the further voyages of the New World. If you are hung up on celebrating the ‘founder’ of the “North America”, you are looking at the small picture. The big picture is that Columbus changed the world. That is history.
Columbus Day has been celebrated for a long time in the USA to acknowledge his voyage and ancestry.
It is also a beautiful time of the year to have a holiday. I always enjoyed it as such and my grandmother maiden name was Colombo (Columbo). If you want to take up this topic with the Colombos of the NYC area, Let me know.
At 8 am this morning I have a couple surveys to take and get recorded, a stop at the bank, then the post office. Round trip about 20 miles.
I tell SWMBO "see ya in an hour plus, got go to courthouse, PO, & bank. Need anything from store".
She about fell over laughing at me. Done laughing, so we had a Bloody Mary instead to celebrate, we don't like Rum... :-S
Colombo Day is right up there with Labor Day (celebrating unions??). Why don't they make the best holiday of all "sacred" - HALLOWEEN!! Make it 3 days. The day before to get ready, then the big holiday, then the day after to clean up. 😉
> The big picture is that Columbus changed the world. That is history.
You are right.
And don't forget that he also gave us syphilis.
:good:
The important thing about the Spanish led by Columbus isn't that they came to the Americas, it's that they stayed.
holiday today? . . yes indeed!
This notion of discovery is a bit racist in my opinion. If you're looking for archaeological proof research the Paisley Caves in Oregon that puts humanoids on this continent at least 14,300 years ago . . let's see . . 14300-1492 = 12,808. Anyway, in the spirit of the season, at least north of the border up Canada way . . Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm not picking no fights and I'm sure your ken, the Colombos, are fine folks.
I didn't mean that.
What I mean is why do we celebrate a holiday that is factual incorrect?
It just chaffs my noogies when I hear someone say something about Columbus discovering America. Vespucci didn't either.

Nothing racist at all meant. I'm not wired that way. I don't know about the Paisley Caves, but I have heard there have been remains found of a Chinese ship found in north west. Dating back a good thousand years before any east-coast "discoverers".

My Colombo comment was said in a light vain.
You have to overlook that the discover tag was placed upon Columbus. He was are that there were voyages before him. He used Basque navigators and he was aware of the wind currents of the Atlantic. He planned his voyages on these facts. He was versed in astronomical knowledge also. Columbus was all about the economic benefits of finding shorter trade routes. Yes, he accidently arrived in the New World.
He was extremely important historical figure of the times and of mankind. Name me something else that changed the world besides the moveable press.
It peeves me when people do not see the big picture of the voyages of Columbus and pot shot it because he did not discover America.
So Eric, who discovered America? I have read various accounts. There seems to be a host of possibilities.
There are even some Knight Templar theories besides the Norse.
Columbus Day is no longer a California State Holiday.
Wonder where they got the CAD drawings to build these from?
I must be lucky, never got it!
Little off topic, but over my many years of living in MI the "Tall Ships" had an event. Not sure if annual or whenever, but those big old tall ship sailing vessel replicas would tour the Great Lakes.
Circling around Bay City, Cheyboygan, Charlevoix, Muskegon (Grand Haven), then circle back around the South end of Lake MI to Chicago & Milwaukee and be on their exit plan. Pretty impressive stuff, especially as a kid, but almost more so as a grown up who appreciates the physics behind what they accomplished in much tougher waters than the Great Lakes offer. Just ask the Captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I took my kids to one in Muskegon. Very cool.
