Having fun with latitude and longitude

A few days ago while playing with the site "latitudeandlongitude.com" I found where I would hit the Canadian border if I went straight north from my house. It turns out I would have to swim several miles across Lake of the Woods to hit the border while treading water until someone official came along.

Today I went in search of where I would hit the Pacific Ocean if I went straight west from here. It turns out to be what must be a rather scenic spot just south of San Francisco near the south side of Daly City, a short distance west of where Hwy 1/Cabrillo Hwy crosses Hwy 35 with a big cloverleaf system. There appear to be massive rock islands a bit offshore. I hope the general flow of water is from north to south as I note there is a wastewater operation a thousand feet to the south of MY SPOT on the beach.

Where would you hit the Pacific Ocean if you went straight west?

Without looking at a map, It would be a nice 15 mile walk with a few small lakes to swim across and I would be standing on the East shore of Lake Michigan. This guy is to old and smart to even think about swimming any further. END OF JOURNEY, turn around and walk home!

Ha! I hit 2 miles north of Lion Rock. I live 13 mile from there, and I can can see it from where I am camping this weekend.

I would end up at Pacifica Beach. A whole whopping 5.4 miles from my place. A great place to take the family on the few days it gets above 60° there.

This brings us back to the "center of section" debate. Maybe instead of maintaining a constant 270 degree heading, you should prolong a straight line (great circle) that starts out at 270 degrees? 😀

I had no trouble understanding you meant "a line of constant bearing"...

EVERYBODY knows E-W lines are really arcs! :snarky:

On a secluded beach in Northern California just near Petrolia south of Eureka. If I go east, I end up at a fancy eating hole in New Jersey: 1485 Ocean Avenue.

If I go west from here, I hit the Tasman Sea, not the Pacific

NZ also has a Westport - and it really does look quite similar to your photo

Looks like I would be on the north side of the Pajaro Dunes (condos?).

The odd thing is that even though I am in Kentucky:

If I went directly west from my house, I would have to pass through Miami to get to the Pacific Ocean.
