Went I was a boy my punishment was to split wood and since I was in trouble a frequently I split a lot of wood. We had an old Homelite chain saw and wedges and wood mauls and lots of sweat and back breaking labor.
I swore I would not do that crap ever again. However I got tired of seeing dead limbs and trees that needed felling so I went and violated that.
A few weeks ago I went and bought a new Stihl Wood Boss and have been putting it to use. The problem I am having though is now that I am 53 and not 16 I gotta tell ya this wood cutting crap is hard work. I don't recall working chain saw in my youth to be this blasted hard.
It is 8PM and I am wore and in bed. What a light weight wuss I have become.
My bones are old too.?ÿ I can't do near what I could when I 53...let alone 20.
My suggestion would be to do what I do nowadays; sub it out.?ÿ Find a 16 year old that needs some spending money. ??ÿ
Cutting and splitting wood is good excercise. I did a half chord 2 weeks ago to break in my (second) new shoulder. Granted that's not a big load but at 4 months post-op I was pleased to get it done.
Was working that hard and jolting the previous joint the reason for needing the new shoulder?
Ride around until you see one of these in someones backyard. Stop and tell them you have some good wood. They will pay you to come clean it up.
Hell, I??m 68 and STILL do things I should never attempt. After limping around the last 5 weeks with 2 broken bones in my foot I have finally decided to stay the hell off a 6?? ladder while ??trying? to install a light in a 12?? ceiling. I??m living proof men grow old but never grow up.?ÿ ??ÿ
I am so blasted sore right now I am gonna take it easy today. I put the trees on the ground and got most of the big limbs moved to the burn pile but there is still quite a bit to move.
Jumping from helicopters and racing motorcycles were the primary external contributers...
Why not turn limbs into firewood?
I use everything down to armsize.
I cut the trees into firewood lengths and create a pile and then borrow or rent a splitter and hire someone for one day to split it all and stack.
As Paden said, sub it out. ?ÿFocus on your strengths.

Everything of firewood size is going to my son. Unfortunately he was not here to help with the hard part.

I'm the same age as you and I cut and split?ÿ4-5 chord every year by hand. Trick is not to try and?ÿdo all of it an once. After work I'll split and stack for half an hour to an hour, work out all of my day's?ÿfrustrations and then enjoy a frosty IPA. It's good exercise and will?ÿkeep you fit, but not if you go from zero to sixty in 5.5 seconds and try and?ÿget it all done at once. That'll wreck you. Got to pace yourself. Good friend of mine, retired surveyor, 67, does the same and he can run circles around guys half his age.
I am guilty of overdoing it frequently.
The two best things I bought for wood is a small Kubota tractor and and gas powered wood splitter.?ÿ It makes life easier but its still hard work.?ÿ?ÿ I split the wood, toss it in the end loader bucket and then haul it to my wood pile.?ÿ I even get the bucket fill of wood near waist high so when I stack it I don't have to bend over near as much.
