As my wife was leaving a nature park yesterday, this thing crawled down the windshield of her car and freaked out her and the kids. Looks to be 6 to 8" long. She took a picture of it with her cellphone. Looks like a huge grasshopper. I've never seen any grasshopper that big and I have no idea what it is.

Looks like a Katydid. When we lived in Kissimmee 4 years back one blew in the car window and landed on my 7 year old daughter. Hilarity ensued.

Here's a link with some common Florida Grasshoppers, none of which look like this. And I'm familiar with the larger varities (the come out in droves seasonally) and I've never seen one larger than about 3 inches long.

looks like a cricket to me. Fat body and the spike coming out it rear. Not a well researched type answer but there you go.

Just not sure what kind it is. I googled 'cricket' and none of the pics looked like your pic. Mostly just guys holding and swinging paddles. Musta been some big crickets around. I'm guessing thats what they were swinging at, giant crickets.
