This particular type of plumb bob is more commonly known as a "lathe dead center." But I guess if you can find a way to tie a string around it, it'll point in the direction of local gravity anyway.
So, I guess this means we've found a new use for our plumb bobs, providing we can figure a way to attach them to the tail stock on a lathe.

I have this old plumbob that I can remember being in my Dad's tool box
when I was in grade school.
Since I just turned 70 last week, I suppose you could classify it as
somewhat vintage. It looked old back then. I think it belonged to my grandfather.
When you remove the cap, inside is a plug with a screw driver slot.
When you shake it, it feels like a heavy liquid inside (possibly mercury).
