The one with the really big horns that go nearly straight up is a Watusi, I believe.?ÿ Nothing fragile about those horns as they are very thick.

Would worry more about the Longhorn as it covers such a wide path of potential destruction.?ÿ Owned a Longhorn cow for a few years, but, her horns had been chopped to be only about a foot long each way.?ÿ I really liked her calves, but, she would not respect barb wire fences.?ÿ Walk right through them as if they weren't slicing her up.

I'm slower these days so don't play "dodge-em" as much as I used to.?ÿ That can make your heart go pitter patter far too fast, especially if the ground is slippery.

We had an Angus bull that would not stay in a fence.?ÿ We repaired, reinforced and raised fences to no avail.?ÿ My father finally stopped him by putting a ring in his nose with a short piece of chain attached.

@andy-bruner?ÿ

A common solution to the problem uses a stock trailer and either a butchering facility or a livestock auction barn, generally resulting in the same end for the wandering bovine.

Many years ago I purchased 51 young heifers and pastured them on the farm where my sister and brother-in-law lived at the time.?ÿ One day, while watching the herd come from a remote corner to get to the pond, my brother-in-law pointed out a specific heifer and said to watch what she would do.?ÿ Every other animal in the herd followed the standard path that curved northward to a gate then southeasterly to the pond.?ÿ Not that one heifer,.?ÿ She went straight towards the pond until she met the six strands of barbed wire in the fence.?ÿ She slowly stuck her head and neck between two strands and carefully moved each front leg forward the scooched forward until she could carefully move each hind leg forward, thus raking her hide viciously from the barbs, but achieving her goal of traveling the shortest distance to the pond.

You're telling your age, Geezer.?ÿ The watusi dance craze was SIXTY years ago.

Perhaps you were more in tune with the Mashed Potato craze.

I remember my older sister and her friends trying to master The Twist.?ÿ They were told to sort of pretend you were drying your back with a towel and putting out a cigarette with one foot at the same time.

@holy-cow I have a steer that does this now. Darn thing gets out eats the grass on other side of fence then goes back in with the herd eventually. Now when i get a call i donƒ??t rush in panic. One lady calls me at least on e a week and sais he is out. Then an hour later calls and sais he is back in. I need the spring flush to hit as he will be ready for the freezer then. Or I need to just feed him out. I have some old wire and so its not as sharp. But all the others stay put for the most part. Except when storms come and trees take out the fence.

An elderly neighbor lady named the longhorn cow I used to have "Horny" because of her big stubs.?ÿ Horny would go through any fence she encountered if she so desired.?ÿ Much of the time she was directly across the road from the elderly neighbor.?ÿ My mother would receive a call, "Horny is out again."?ÿ Either she would drive over to tell Horny to get back in the field (which she normally would, if pestered) or she would find me first and have me go pester Horny.?ÿ Ol' Horny was the topic of discussion at various little gatherings of sweet little old ladies in the neighborhood.

That happened near me once with three steers.?ÿ I ended up being the sucker that bought them at the auction barn being none the wiser.?ÿ They looked great but turned out to be complete lunatics.?ÿ One jumped right through the side of a barn, then over the fence and the other two jumped the steel panels like fat deer all heading in different directions.?ÿ The only good that came out of that was I had a good excuse for a lot of saddle time to look for them.?ÿ With a gun.?ÿ Cow season is all year.

@tom-bushelman?ÿ

One time when I was assembling a herd of about 450 lb. heifers two or three at a time I had a similar experience.?ÿ Had about 20 heifers in the pasture when I pulled up with the two new ones.?ÿ Everybody gathered around thinking I was going to give them some feed, which worked nice to help the new ones introduce themselves and do the traditional head wrestling routine.?ÿ Nope.?ÿ Not these two.?ÿ Opened the gate and they acted as if they had roman candles stuck up their butts.?ÿ Crashed through the herd with one veering to the northwest and the other to the west.?ÿ Never slowed down as long as I could still see them.

The one ended up in the cow herd across the fence to the northwest and seemed content to stay there.?ÿ I eventually got a phone call from the neighbor a mile to the west reporting he had my other one hanging out in his cow herd.?ÿ Once recovered, they both went straight back to the sale barn so someone else could discover what a poor choice they had made.

How in hell do yƒ??all agricultural livestock boys ƒ??round upƒ? the renegade bovines miles away from where they escaped?

Do they all have Apple Air tags on them? If, so what is the ƒ??normalƒ? mode of relocation?

????

@flga-2-2?ÿ

That can be quite entertaining at times.?ÿ Generally, it involves assistance from the other landowners.?ÿ Sometimes it involves horses and cowboys that are experts with a rope.?ÿ Many times it becomes a matter of tricking them into someone else's corral system so they can be loaded into a stock trailer for the trip home or somewhere FAR WORSE.

One day my workers were hauling some 500 lb. heifers for me and they did not gate the slide gate on the rear of the trailer fastened correctly.?ÿ As they bounced along the US highway, the gate kept opening more and more.?ÿ The driver looked back in the side mirror and saw a heifer's head sticking out from behind the trailer which should not have been possible.?ÿ He immediately slowed down and finally stopped.?ÿ Before he could run back to shut the slide gate, that heifer escaped, but he managed to prevent the others from getting out.?ÿ This was at the north end of a river bridge.?ÿ The heifer headed downhill from the road embankment into several hundred acres of dense trees and underbrush.?ÿ If she got across a nearby creek, she could have kept going for miles.

When I got the news, I immediately called a buddy of mine whose son and several of his fulltime cowboys were excellent ropers.?ÿ Several hours later, she was returned to another of my trailers to get the next dozen miles to join up with the others we had moved.?ÿ They refused payment.?ÿ Said it was the biggest challenge and most fun they had had in a long time.

On another occasion, most of a herd were being pursued by a pack of dogs and they crashed through the fence into the railroad right of way.?ÿ The last dozen were found about three miles down the track, then up a dead end road munching on some big bales of hay a friend had stored there.?ÿ In this case, I pushed them back up the railroad to the first road crossing, then north up that county road until we reached a gate going into another pasture I owned.?ÿ Left them there for the rest of the Winter.

@flga-2-2 hey you might be onto something with apple airtags. ?ÿLol. Out west and mid west its a hole different situation than here in the east. They donƒ??t usually travel as far here as they will out west. Because of all the trees. They usually stop in the first green pasture or roadside so i just place kids my girls in back of truck. They give the cattle call and rattle a feed bag or bucket and they usually follow right behind truck. Any bovine that doesnƒ??t cooperate goes on stock trailer. I donƒ??t have the time to mess with them. My brother makes his living training horses and starting colts. As well as rounding up wild bovines in west . ?ÿMe i love them but its more of a teaching tool for my kids. Letting them see the life cycle. Learn responsibility caring for animals no matter what. I recieved a call one night and at 8pm drove over as i knew a first time hefier was in trouble. A 10 year old girl 8 year old girl and myself and wife. I roped her from the ground tied her off to first tree ?ÿ And we pulled a calf to save the momma . It was not a quick deal. We had to all get the cow up on her feet from laying on her side. Thats 1100 pounds. My kids were tired and we were all soaked. But they never complained and my 10 year old was on phone with vet coaching me through every second and every step as i was checking everything inside and out. My 2ng heifer we saved both calf and cow. Two kids helping data carry a 85 pound calf and getting her to suck momma was priceless. They both now know no matter how hard life comes at them when it has to be done you just do it.

@olemanriver?ÿ

Sometime in the past I have read about birthing calves and colts and that stuff ainƒ??t for me. It was All Creatures Great and Smallƒ?? ?ÿI witnessed my daughterƒ??s birth 38 years ago and am still traumatized from that fiasco. ?????ÿ
