I have a 2014 GMC Sierra.?ÿ Yesterday, I get to the office and when I walk behind my truck, I see that the back-up lights are on.?ÿ After a quick google search, it is more than likely caused by a relay in the fuse box.?ÿ The problem is that the relay is in the form of a PCB instead of an interchangeable part.?ÿ $280 fix for what should be a $3 fix.
When ever I hear a no start problem my first thing is to load test the battery. ?ÿI worked on cars a lot more in the past but I still do. ?ÿFor years I didn??t own a load tester but finally bought one about 10 years ago. ?ÿLess than $50. ?ÿThere are an amazing amount of problems caused by a weak battery to poor start conditions to the vehicle not running right to electrical gremlins. ?ÿThat said if the battery checks out it could be about a dozen things, starter, relay, ignition switch etc.?ÿ
The problem seems to have cured itself, at least for now.
Maybe towing vibrated whatever it was back into position. Maybe the car has a soul and just wanted personal attention, who knows.
@dougie :?ÿ I had a car once I named Shasta, not because she was yellow like the daisy, but because she hasta have gas, she hasta have oil...
A good mechanic seems to be as elusive as the survey tech help so many posters are looking for.?ÿ We had a really good one locally, but he was moving shop every few months.?ÿ Not a big deal in a small town as he was easy to find again, but really didn't inspire confidence despite the good work he did.
My dad had a Rolls Kanhardly; it would roll down one hill and could hardly make it up the next...
@jon-payne We bought a slightly used car in 1999. It had a warranty issue so we took it back, Mike was the service advisor that took care of it. We've been taking the cars to Mike ever since. He actually takes care of the cars and is professional. Most mechanics are self trained wrench monkeys, they don??t really know what they are doing. Mike left his employer of over 20 years. I tracked him down on Facebook. He is working at a fleet service center. Called him and setup next service. This is the first time he isn??t sure what is wrong and now the car is working as if nothing ever happened.
I tracked him down on Facebook.
Once you find a good one, you need to develop a stalker mentality to keep up with them.
I think I have tracked down the source of the trouble.?ÿ This is so stupid I'm astounded by the stupidity of it.
The key fob battery is low.?ÿ Wife texts me today, key fob not working, battery low.?ÿ The car did start so maybe it has enough juice to tell the car's brain it is okay to start.
On the Friday it refused to start I ran the starter three or four times which cleared all the gas out of the fuel lines, etc. My theory is the problem was the key fob dead battery, that's it.
Tow to mechanic but he doesn't get to it until Monday. By then the key fob battery had rebounded a little bit.
He starts, it dies, he starts, it dies, he starts, runs well, after that no problem.?ÿ I think it took three attempts to get the gas back into the system.
So I'm fairly certain I only need to change the key fob battery and the problem hopefully won't return.
Hopefully that will be it.?ÿ At least it will be an easy thing to try.
I hadn't owned a car with the keyless ignition before and I was out driving around a national recreation area I live next to.?ÿ 170,000 acres with trails and gravel roads all around it.?ÿ I happened to pass a Jeep that was in the entrance to a dirt road that goes down to the lake.?ÿ I think the people fortunately decided not to drive down it and get their nice grand Cherokee dirty as the dirt road was muddy, so I actually saw them.?ÿ Something looked odd and it was getting late in the day, so I turned around and went back by them to ask if they needed help.?ÿ They couldn't start their vehicle.?ÿ I had to drive to the top of the hill to get signal to be able to search what to do since their car had no key!?ÿ Found out you could do some fancy lock, unlock, hold key just so while wiggling your toes BS to start it with a low battery in the key fob.?ÿ That didn't work so I drove them 40 minutes to meet some family half way to their home.
Since then, I have gotten a car with a keyless ignition, I was very concerned about running out of battery and being stuck somewhere.?ÿ Fortunately the car tells me way in advance when the battery in the fob is going low.
