Got a bit distracted while driving today.?ÿ Driving on a paved county road that has about 30 vehicles per day using it.?ÿ Looked up and saw a cast iron bath tub coming down the road towards me.?ÿ A local farmer/rancher who is extremely tight fisted had one chained to his big bale hauling system on his flatbed truck such that it was swinging along about two feet above the pavement.?ÿ I knew he was headed to one of his pastures to use the tub as a trough for salt and mineral for his cattle.?ÿ While thinking about how humorous that looked I happened to look up to see a State Trooper suddenly whip into a field entrance and preparing to turn around.?ÿ I knew what that had to mean.?ÿ Bad news for Bozo the Surveyor.

..ive had em spin around, and discovered I was not their point of interest.?ÿ

Once I was on a two-lane OK state highway up where there's only about 1 person for every 6 square miles.?ÿ I was done for the day and looking at a 3 hour drive home to supper, I was definitely speeding.?ÿ The prairie up there just rolls and even though it looks flat a car can pop up over a 'roll' that wasn't visible before.?ÿ "Sight distance" is non-existent up there.

I was well over 85 mph southbound when a northbound Oklahoma State Trooper popped up ahead of me cresting a roll.?ÿ As he zipped past me in the opposite direction I glanced in my mirror to catch a glimpse of him as he disappeared over the crest...his brake lights were shining.?ÿ I knew he was going to turn around and pursue me.?ÿ I shut it down and pulled over to the right to wait for him.?ÿ All of a sudden he topped the hill southbound all lit up doing about 100.?ÿ He had his brakes locked up as he slid past me.?ÿ

He finally ground to a halt and backed up a hundred yards to park in front of me.?ÿ When he walked up to the window I asked him, "Lookin' for me?"?ÿ 😉

All I got was a warning because I'm a nice guy...

If they weren't related I bet HC used to go to school with the trooper's next-door-neighbor's-nephew's-son-in-law's-grandmother.

About the bathtub going 50 mph.?ÿ Back 40+ years ago when I was in school Southern Technical Institute (now defunct) where I was going used to host bathtub races on the campus.?ÿ Now this is not a tub on a frame pushed by a team of students.?ÿ A cast iron bathtub was mounted on a frame, a roll cage was added, steering and braking systems included and add up to a 175 cc motorcycle engine, some EEs always had an electric tub but the motors always burnt out before the end of the race.?ÿ Of course they had to be insured to host the races so the Sports Car Club of America rules has to be met.?ÿ Some of the tubs could hit 70+ mph in the tangents. The Wide World of Sports asked to be able to broadcast one year but our parent school, Georgia Tech, declined unless they would also broadcast the Ramblin' Raft Race down the Chattahoochee River.

@andy-bruner

That's hilarious.?ÿ I guess they had to put a limit on engine size.?ÿ Otherwise they all probably would have had "three-fitty Chevy" engines in them.

@paden-cash No self respecting Mechanical Engineer would do THAT (grin).?ÿ For years I kept a souvenir tee shirt that had a silk screen of one of the tubs with the logo "Do It In A Tub".

When I was working at an upstate county in NY, I was out checking my permits. Around this time the NY State Troopers had just begun receiving their brand new shiny Mustangs. One passed me in the other direction and I was eyeing the car thinking "is that the new Mustang" (didn't have a light bar, but had that distinctive color scheme) and made eye contact with the driver. Kept about my business when the next thing I know he's in my rearview, then just passed me by. What I think happened is that the county vehicles did not have a registration sticker (in NY it and the inspection sticker are in the lower left corner of the windshield), rather had regular looking plates that said "OFFICIAL" across the top, so he probably noticed the lacking sticker and was going to pull me over until he saw the plates. Along the same line the other person who did the same type of work as me told us he had been pulled over for it, and the officer told him that they had had reports of a black man driving around the area with no registration sticker.
