Blowing up the bathroom.
I had an academically superior classmate in High School who thought it would be interesting to flush the chemistry labs entire supply of sodium down a toilet. He took the 2"x2" cube of metal, wrapped in an oil-soaked paper towel to keep it from bursting into flame on contact with oxygen, into one of the bathrooms, dropped it in a toilet, flushed, and ran out the door. On the way out he ran full-speed into one of the teachers just as the sodium exploded. It had apparently made it a few feet down the line, so the explosion was confined, making it incredibly forceful. It blew several of the toilets in that bathroom off the floor, and destroyed a lengthy section of pipe. He was expelled and his Dad had to pay for the repairs, which took several months. He had just been awarded a scholarship by the U.S. Navy, which they revoked. I never saw him again - always wondered what became of him.
Some of the most intellectually gifted people make the most outlandish mistakes that cost them dearly in the long run.
