My wife and I and a family friend met our son and his girlfriend in Chicago last weekend.?ÿ Saturday evening, after a f-f-f-f-freezing cold Cubs game, the four of them went for a walk before dinner while I stayed at the hotel.?ÿ Right about the time they were due back at the hotel I got a text about an accident, and started hearing sirens coming from all directions.?ÿ The security camera video below shows what happened (I slowed it down to 25% speed).

A police officer had pulled a car over and ordered the driver out of the car.?ÿ The driver refused, and took off in the car while the crosswalk ahead of him was full of pedestrians.?ÿ My wife and our friend were nearly across when it happened; my wife wasn't touched, but our friend had to push off the car with here right hand to get clear.?ÿ She jammed her shoulder, but not badly, it was just sore for a couple of days.?ÿ My son and his girlfriend were behind them, and he stopped just short of being hit.?ÿ He turned around, grabbed his girlfriend (who was trailing him by a few steps) and ran back to the other sidewalk.?ÿ (I *think* he may have knocked over a child as he ran; it's not clear, though his girlfriend can be seen helping the child up.)?ÿ The officer who made the traffic stop tried to hold onto the car as it bolted, and he was thrown to the ground.?ÿ He wasn't seriously injured.?ÿ The one woman who got really slammed was a mom from St. Louis (I think) who was vacationing along with a friend and their two young girls.?ÿ She tried to get up after she landed, but was too banged up to do so.?ÿ We're told that she was going to be okay.

It could have been much worse, no thanks to the perpetrator.?ÿ I assume the car was stolen, as it was recovered a few blocks away.?ÿ Last I heard that hadn't caught the guy.

Below are a few annotated screenshots identifying some of the players.

Wow.

?ÿ

I'm glad your family is ok, and that lady didn't get too seriously injured.

it's unfortunate that the other side of the good and adequate people is the lowlife scumbag SoS decrepit loser aspects.

super lucky, always hug your close ones, always.

I live in the St. Louis metro area and my Brother lives in Chicago. He moved out of the City last year.?ÿ While neither Cities?ÿ (St. Louis and Chicago) are historically known as safe, I can honestly say that both are on a decline. Downtown St. Louis is a 100% no go in the evenings outside of small "safe zones".?ÿ When we visit Chicago we no longer go downtown, so many places closed and have not recovered.?ÿ Criminals are very brazen these days. Covid, inflation and gas prices are really pushing lots of folks to the breaking point.?ÿ

Very glad to hear nothing major happened.?ÿ I truly hope the rest of your visit was good.?ÿ

Very lucky that things weren't much worse.?ÿ Yes, hug your loved ones.?ÿ I think one of mine is touring Italy at this time.?ÿ Not sure because she firmly believes in not letting anyone know the house is empty.

They were with the woman who got smacked and her child.?ÿ Two moms, two girls from St. Louis.?ÿ My wife noticed them a few minutes earlier because they were all so excited about the great time they were having on vacation.

@noodles The areas around the ball park are safe during the ball games.?ÿ Safety in numbers!?ÿ But a few blocks north of the ball park is Washington Ave.?ÿ It is a very hip and happening area - but unfortunately also the place where random gun fire erupts.?ÿ Like any big City there are good and bad areas, and of course random crime can happen anywhere but it is a "normal" report on the news of a shooting in St. Louis on a daily basis, especially when the City population is in a steady decline and now (St. Louis City, not County) has a population at or under 300k.?ÿ?ÿ

@stlsurveyor I used to live in St. Charles and work in Wellston. I would beat the traffic early and sleep in my truck for a bit most mornings. In the summer I had the windows down. Not sure I would try thst now...

That's heart breaking. It's my favorite city!!! I want it to stay happy and joyful! Had a blast when the Cards clinched the pennant when we were there! People singing and dancing in the streets, high 5'ing each other...
Maybe that will happen this year? ?????ÿ

@noodles It's not all doom and gloom. There are lots of developments happening, extremely nice new MLS Stadium being built and lots of cranes building high rises.?ÿ Hopefully it is just a shift of workplace dynamics. Downtown StL is extremely reliant on office workers and for the last two years simply were not there. As you would expect most restaurants, stores, coffee shops closed up.?ÿ Losing the Rams also hurt downtown. Like anything else, when there is a void something will fill in the space.?ÿ?ÿ

Baseball is back and the Cards look good.?ÿ Ballpark Village is all complete now, folks are returning to the office, concerts halls are open so I hope things start to return.?ÿ

@stlsurveyor?ÿ

As of April 11, there had already been 67 homicides in the Kansas City metro area.?ÿ They had 244 homicides in 2021.

"The number of killings in St. Louis dropped 25% to 196 in 2021 compared to 263 in 2020. It marks a return to pre-COVID-19 levels; St. Louis police recorded 194 killings in 2019 and 186 in 2018."

You learn how unelectable you really are when you finish behind Chief Wana Dubie and he got 30,340 votes.
