Did some work this morning on a huge cattle ranch.?ÿ I was surprised to find they had 24 hour security personnel wandering the prairie.
There was a lock on one gate that was from the electric co-op for which I have a key.?ÿ Before I had the gate locked behind me I was in the presence of their security guard that came barreling over the waving grass in his Ford.?ÿ My entrance had been seen and taped by security camera.?ÿ I didn't have the guts to ask where the camera was at...there was nothing around but barbed-wire, t-posts and grass.?ÿ
Nice enough fella.?ÿ He explained he was the day watch.?ÿ I asked him if he just sat around waiting for someone to get in the pasture and he said yes.?ÿ Then he explained the entire herd of black cattle that I was looking at was Registered Wagyu.?ÿ My next question was something like WTF is a wagoo?
Well these are some expensive Japanese cows (although most of their parents actually came from Australia...).?ÿ On the hoof they're probably worth ten times what home-growed Black Angus or Hereford are worth.?ÿ They look like a totally black Holstein to me.?ÿ My acquaintance quipped, "If you saw one in the road you probably wouldn't steal it".?ÿ
I had no idea there was even such a thing.?ÿ I did see on the Food Channel they sell Kobe (a breed of Wagyu) steak in NYC for big bucks...but a bagel and coffee can cost $15 there too.
Anyway we had a good chat and an education.?ÿ The owner bought a prized breeding bull for which he paid a quarter of a million bucks.?ÿ The bull is still in Australia half way through his 6 months quarantine before being shipped here to the US.?ÿ I had to ask how the hell you get a 1500 pound bull from Australia to the US.?ÿ I found out they charter a private jet.
And I thought rock and roll bands probably made a mess in chartered jets.... sheesh...
You can get it on sale at Costco, sometimes...

I did some work in Eastern Washington; the rancher there told me it wasn't uncommon for some one to load up a trailer with his cattle, in the middle of the night, never to be seen again. Just plain old cattle cows...
?ÿMaybe he was just guessing it was a trailer.
I remember when had a family dinner one night at a really nice steakhouse that severed Japanese Wagyu, one of my sisters order it. After everyone at the table took a bite to see what the big deal was, she didnt have much left for herself. I myself just like a nice steak from the local supermarket from the normal free to roam around cattle.
My uncle lives next to a guy who has some kind of special cattle, told my Uncle if he ever gets a Bull and it gets into his pasture, he will shoot the Bull on site, and will have a lawsuit if it knocks up one of his cows.
Worked on a project years ago and mentioned to the caretaker how beautiful the horses were. He told us they were some type of prize Arabians. They sent them to school in Germany every summer. We asked HTH they got them to Germany and back, and of course were told that it was by charter jet. They paid about $50,000/horse (every year) for the transportation and schooling. I saw about a dozen horses, did the math in my head, and decided that our fee for the survey was far too low...
For our BBQ Contests we buy Snakeriver Farms Wagyu Gold Briskets. Seriously Marbled - sometimes too much...But they really do make a difference especially when first place verses second can cost you 2500$
